Un film comme je n’en avais encore jamais vu … du grand art !
« Sound of Metal » raconte l’histoire d’un batteur dans un groupe de Metal. Le groupe est en fait un duo composé de Ruben à la batterie et de sa copine Lou au chant. Le couple vit dans son camping-car et fait le tour des petites salles de concert jusqu’à ce que Ruben subisse soudainement des problèmes d’audition. Après consultation d’un médecin, le diagnostic tombe : il est maintenant sourd ! Que faire ? Continuer leur tournée ? L’abandonner ? Arrêter la musique ? Son but semble être de trouver l’argent pour des implants et ainsi continuer comme si de rien n’était, mais Ruben va se retrouver confronté à un monde qui lui était jusqu’alors inconnu et qui pourrait bien tout changer …
Amazon Studios nous offre une fois de plus cette année un film innovant, captivant et très puissant. L’histoire nous touche par sa profonde humanité et ses émotions subtilement partagées. Ça prend aux tripes et on suit tout le temps le personnage principal, de sa souffrance à ses espoirs en passant par ses doutes. Une remarquable gestion du point de vue du spectateur, toujours entre deux prismes : celui des entendants auquel Ruben cherche désespérément à s’accrocher et celui des sourds dans lequel nous sommes perdus, que Ruben découvre et qui va lui ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives.
On retiendra sûrement le jeu d’acteur avec une magnifique performance de Riz Ahmed qui porte totalement le film aux côtés d’Olivia Cooke et Paul Raci, notamment au travers de longs plans-séquences très immersifs, mais « Sound of Metal » se distingue surtout pour son incroyable travail sur le son. Une expérience de cinéma ! A voir en salle ou avec casque définitivement.
Très clairement l’un des tous meilleurs films de l’année pour moi !

A film like I’ve never seen before … great cinema!
“Sound of Metal” tells the story of a drummer in a Metal band. The band is in fact a duo composed of Ruben on drums and his girlfriend Lou on vocals. The couple lives in their RV and goes around small concert halls until Ruben suddenly has hearing problems. After consulting a doctor, the diagnosis is made: he is now deaf! What to do? Continue their tour? Give it up? Stop playing music? His goal seems to be to find the money for implants and thus continue as if nothing had happened, but Ruben will find himself facing a world that was unknown to him until then and that could well change everything …
Amazon Studios offers us once again this year an innovative, captivating and very powerful film. The story moves us with its profound humanity and subtly shared emotions. It takes guts and we follow the main character all the time, from his suffering to his hopes and doubts. A remarkable handling of the viewer’s point of view, always between two lenses: that of the hearing people, which Ruben desperately tries to hold on to, and that of the deaf, in which we are lost, which Ruben discovers and which will open up new perspectives for him.
The acting will surely be remembered with a wonderful performance by Riz Ahmed who totally carries the film alongside Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci, especially through long and very immersive long shots, but “Sound of Metal” stands out above all for its incredible work on sound. A cinema experience! Definitely to be seen in theaters or with headphones.
Clearly one of the very best movies of the year for me!
