Un remarquable double biopic !
C’est l’histoire de William O’Neal un indic du FBI infiltré au sein du Black Panther Party de l’Illinois où le Président n’est autre que le très charismatique Fred Hampton. Nous suivons donc l’ascension de ce leader né et son amour pour une jeune révolutionnaire en parallèle de la bataille pour l’âme du jeune O’Neal entre ses patrons du FBI et la pression de J. Edgar Hoover, et ses compatriotes Panthers luttant pour les droits sociaux dans les années 1960.
« Judas and the Black Messiah » est un puissant drame historique produit notamment par Ryan Coogler et réalisé par Shaka King. Le film a récolté six nominations aux Oscars cette année, et gagné le Golden Globe et l’Oscar du Meilleur Acteur dans un second rôle pour l’excellent Daniel Kaluuya dans le rôle de Fred Hampton. Mais le film a en réalité deux rôles principaux avec également Lakeith Stanfield dans le rôle de Wild Bill, et si les deux acteurs sont tous deux nommés aux Oscars ce n’est pas pour rien. Quant à la raison de leur nomination dans la catégorie du second rôle, c’est uniquement une stratégie de campagne de Warner Bros pour ne pas faire face à l’héritage de Chadwick Boseman dont la victoire dans l’autre catégorie était pressentie.
Le film aurait tout aussi bien pu s’intituler « Le tribun et le traître » tant l’on suit l’ascension des deux personnages en parallèle chacun dans leur spécialité : la guerre des mots et celle des apparences. Les acteurs sont tous excellents, de Jesse Plemons l’agent du FBI à Dominique Fishback la poète, l’atmosphère du film est enivrante par ses beaux visuels, la musique nous transporte parfaitement dans chaque camp (H.E.R. ayant également remporté l’Oscar de meilleure chanson de film) et l’histoire est excellente faite d’une bonne intrigue et d’une histoire vraie au puissant message. C’est simple : tout y est !
L’un des tout meilleurs films de cette année.

This is the story of William O’Neal, an FBI informant who infiltrated the Black Panther Party of Illinois, where the President is none other than the charismatic Fred Hampton. We follow the rise of this born leader and his love for a young revolutionary in parallel with the battle for the soul of the young O’Neal between his FBI bosses and the pressure from J. Edgar Hoover, and his fellow Panthers fighting for social rights in the 1960s.
“Judas and the Black Messiah” is a powerful historical drama produced by Ryan Coogler and directed by Shaka King. The film earned six Oscar nominations this year, and won the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the excellent Daniel Kaluuya as Fred Hampton. The film actually has two leads with Lakeith Stanfield as Wild Bill, so there’s definitely a reason both actors are nominated for Academy Awards, and as for why it’s in the supporting actor category, that’s just a campaign strategy from Warner Bros. to avoid facing Chadwick Boseman’s legacy as he was expected to win in the other category.
The film could just as well have been called « The Tribune and the Traitor » as we follow the rise of the two characters in parallel, each in their own specialty: the war of words and that of appearances. The actors are all excellent, from Jesse Plemons as the FBI agent to Dominique Fishback as the poet, the atmosphere of the film is intoxicating with its beautiful visuals, the music transports us perfectly into each camp (H.E.R. also won the Oscar for movie song) and the story is excellent made of a good plot and a true story with a powerful message. It’s simple: everything is there!
One of the very best movies of this year.
