Plus qu’un simple biopic, « Harriet » est un film historique relatant une histoire fondatrice des États-Unis et un film social en lien en particulier avec les fortes tensions que le pays connaît aujourd’hui.
Nommé aux Oscars 2020, ce film de Kasi Lemmons sorti en novembre dernier, raconte l’histoire vraie de Minty devenue Harriet Tubman puis le dénommé « Moïse », à savoir la voleuse d’esclaves et conductrice du réseau de chemin de fer clandestin avant la guerre civile américaine. Minty entreprend tout d’abord un très long voyage, seulement guidée par Dieu et suivant son appel vers la Liberté. Puis, Harriet se voit missionner de sauver autant d’esclaves que possible, d’où la tagline du film : « Be free or die » !
Si la première partie du film est particulièrement lente, on ne peut que contempler les magnifiques plans peignant une fresque du Maryland à Philadelphie. Puis dès que le personnage s’est trouvé un but, le film devient plus captivant et bascule presque dans le film d’aventure historique sur ses nombreux sauvetages à hauts risques. Cynthia Erivo marque le personnage par sa présence tout au long du film bien aidée par un remarquable casting secondaire. Mais le véritable point fort du film est sa bande originale, incorporant les chœurs de chant tels des esclaves qui travaillent dans les champs, entre « Sinnerman » et « Go down Moses », se trouve la chanson « Stand up » de Cynthia Erivo.
Enfin, fortement empreint de religion, le film conclut par cette citation qui pourrait également se lire aujourd’hui sous l’angle social aux États-Unis : « I go to prepare a place for you ».

More than a biopic, “Harriet” is a historical film telling a founding story of the United States and a social film particularly related to the strong tensions that the country is experiencing today.
Nominated for the 2020 Oscars, this film directed by Kasi Lemmons and released last November, tells the true story of Minty who became Harriet Tubman and then called « Moses », the slaves stealer and conductor of the Underground Railroad network before the American Civil War. Minty first undertakes a very long journey, guided only by God and following his call to Freedom. Then, Harriet is given the mission to save as many slaves as possible, hence the tagline of the film: « Be free or die »!
If the first part of the film is particularly slow, one can only contemplate the magnificent shots painting a fresco from Maryland to Philadelphia. Then as soon as the character has found a purpose, the film becomes more captivating and almost switches to the historical adventure film about her numerous high-risk rescues. Cynthia Erivo shines by her presence throughout the film, supported by a remarkable supporting cast. But the real highlight of the film is its soundtrack, incorporating the singing choirs like slaves working in the fields, between « Sinnerman » and « Go down Moses », is Cynthia Erivo’s song « Stand up ».
Finally, strongly imbued with religion, the film concludes with a quote that could also be read today from a social perspective in the United States: « I go to prepare a place for you ».
