Malcom X. Muhammed Ali. Jim Brown.

Malcolm X. Muhammed Ali. Jim Brown. Sam Cooke … what more can you say?
« One night in Miami » tells the fictional reunion on the famous night of February 25, 1964 in Miami of four famous African American figures: an activist, a boxer, a football player, and a singer. The four friends meet in a motel to celebrate Cassius Clay’s title and find themselves debating their world, a world of a people oppressed by a system that they all decide to fight but differently
Produced by Amazon, presented at the Venice Mostra 2020 and available on Prime Video, « One night in Miami » is Regina King’s first feature film (actress in « Boyz N the hood », « Ray », « If Beale Street could talk »). With a screenplay based on a play by Kemp Powers (co-writer of « Soul »), the director demonstrates great mastery in her theatrical direction, highlighting the performances of actors starring Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr. alongside Lance Reddick, among others.
This (almost) closed-door event in a hotel room shows the importance of the black cause in 1964, the urgency of the fight and the methods of struggle through the divergence of points of view and the differences in tone of the characters. The unity of the « Blacks » is thus called into question by the history and secrets of each character, as is the Muslim cause with the presence and weight in the plot of the Nation of Islam. But it is above all a story of friendship, a deeply human film, very touching and unfortunately carrying a message that is still incredibly relevant today. The fight isn’t over but « a change is gonna come » …
