Beaucoup plus une étude de personnage, qu’un thriller judiciaire, le premier long-métrage de Victoria Musiedlak met en scène Noé Abita dans un récit initiatique où une jeune avocate va y découvrir l’essence de son métier, la noirceur du monde, l’amour, la liberté, ainsi que les désillusions qui vont avec. Avec un titre très révélateur, il s’agit en effet de cette première affaire qui peut faire basculer un destin, anéantir une vocation ou bien obliger à surmonter des obstacles inattendus. L’actrice de « Slalom » et des « Passagers de la Nuit » est parfaite de force fragile et de timidité naïve dans une œuvre assez singulière faisant parfois penser à la récente « Vénus d’argent » dans son ton et son propos. Mais, bien qu’assez troublant, le film manque de mordant et/ou d’émotion pour réellement nous captiver.

Victoria Musiedlak’s first feature film is much more a character study than a legal thriller, and stars Noé Abita in an initiation story in which a young lawyer discovers the essence of her profession, the darkness of the world, love and freedom, as well as the disillusions that follow. With its revealing title (literally “First Case”), this is the story of that first case that can change a destiny, shatter a calling or force one to overcome unexpected hurdles. The actress of “Slalom” and “The Passengers of the Night” is perfect in her fragile strength and naive timidity, in a rather singular work sometimes reminiscent of the recent “The Spirit of Ecstasy” in its tone and theme. But, although quite unsettling, the film lacks the thrust and/or emotion to truly engage us.
