Adulé par des millions d’enfants tant dans les livres de Roald Dahl que dans ses deux premières adaptations cinématographiques, Willy Wonka fait son grand retour chocolaté avec un Timothée Chalamet tout aussi magique. Bienvenue dans un monde idéal et coloré que notre cher chocolatier étend à travers ses inventions sucrées et autres confections ‘bonbonnées’ !
L’histoire nous emmène aux origines du succès de Wonka, un jeune homme excentrique débarquant dans une ville dominée par un cartel de trois hommes d’affaires cacaoyers. Wonka rêve d’y fonder sa chocolaterie et tente de conquérir les cœurs avec ses douceurs droit sorties de l’imagination ; et si ses ennemis lui mettent quelques bâtons dans les roues, son amour pour le chocolat et le bonheur que ce dernier génère chez les gens le motivera d’autant plus.
« Wonka » est un film musical dont les chansons enfantines nous accompagnent dans un univers léger où chaque personnage présente son lot de loufoque, de la tenancière grippe-sou au prêtre accommodant en passant par le policier glouton. Cette extravagance chère à Roald Dahl est néanmoins contrebalancée par le plus sérieux fond de certaines situations – comme la corruption, l’oligopolisme et l’esclavage. Willy Wonka lui-même paraît moins farfelu que ses innovations, souvent ternies par ses propres doutes et ceux de ses compagnons.
Sans être social, le long-métrage reste ainsi dual : il est à la fois une fondante satire des sociétés capitalistes et une gourmande invitation à l’onirisme et au bonheur de se délecter de sucreries. Les outils, machines et décors sont par ailleurs très bien travaillés, notamment cette ville anglo-belgo-franco-germano-suisse industrielle où se déroule l’intrigue. En revanche, « Wonka » manque quelque peu de saveur pour qui a vu le film de 2005 ou lu l’œuvre originale : le film prend peu de risques scénaristiques et est peut-être moins fantasmagorique qu’attendu – quid, par exemple, de la joyeuserie des Oompa-Loompas ? De fait, c’est la signification donnée ici au célèbre ticket d’or qui reflète l’atmosphère générale de « Wonka » : de la nostalgie mêlée à de l’espoir et à de la rêverie, un peu comme à Noël.

The story takes us back to the origins of Wonka’s success, as an eccentric young man who lands in a town dominated by a cartel of three cocoa-growing businessmen. Wonka dreams of setting up his own chocolate factory and tries to win hearts with his imaginative treats; and while his enemies may throw a few hiccups in his way, his love of chocolate and the happiness it brings to people will motivate him all the more.
“Wonka” is a musical film whose childlike songs take us into a light-hearted world where every character has his or her share of zaniness, from the penny-pinching landlady to the accommodating priest and the gluttonous policeman. This extravagance, so dear to Roald Dahl, is nevertheless counterbalanced by the more serious background of certain situations – such as corruption, oligopoly and slavery. Willy Wonka himself seems less far-fetched than his innovations, often tarnished by his own doubts and those of his companions.
Although not a social tale, the film remains dual: it is both a melting pot satire of capitalist societies and a gourmand invitation to dream and indulge in sweets. The tools, machines and scenery are also very well crafted, notably the Anglo-Belgian-French-German-Swiss industrial town where the plot unfolds. On the other hand, “Wonka” is somewhat lacking in flavor for anyone who has seen the 2005 film or read the original story: the film takes very few narrative risks and is perhaps less phantasmagorical than expected – where, for example, is the Oompa-Loompas’ merriment? In fact, it’s the meaning given here to the famous golden ticket that captures the general vibe of « Wonka »: nostalgia mixed with hope and reverie, a bit like Christmas.
