In short:

After “Moonlight”, Barry Jenkins tackled a monument of American literature, James Baldwin. In this subtle and elegant feature film, Barry Jenkins poetically staged the tragic story of an African-American couple facing the injustice of a racist America. Throughout the story, the actors engage in an interpretation that is as fair as it is moving. A rhythm whose slowness is matched by softness, where aesthetics carries passion and where the cleverly delicate editing carefully transcribes the text into the image. A timeless, contemporary and powerful film!

…

“Every black person born in America was born on Beale Street,” states the opening quotation from Baldwin, which then goes on to claim that “Beale Street is our legacy” and that this film is “the impossibility and the possibility, the absolute necessity, to give expression to this legacy”. Barry Jenkins’ new Oscar-winning film for Regina King’s performance, constantly moves between a love story and a protest film, using flashbacks to bridge the two worlds. If the rhythm of the films perfectly matches the softness of a nap, it nevertheless shows very well the state of mind of the characters and their emotional reflection throughout their fight. A powerful film indeed, but not as moving and intense as Jenkins’ previous film « Moonlight ».
