Ce qui apparaît de prime abord comme un énième nouveau produit calibré pour le streaming, s’impose finalement plus comme un buddy-movie à l’ancienne qui nous embarque chez les Soviets en pleine glasnost auprès d’un improbable duo entre un pilote de chasse américain et un ex-agent du KGB. L’alchimie fonctionne particulièrement bien entre un Ryan Reynolds campant son habituelle figure humoristique, et un Kenneth Branagh en contrepoint tout aussi drôle que crédible en vieux briscard de la taïga musclé et combatif. Si le scénario apparaît prévisible et souvent invraisemblable, il s’attache néanmoins à dépeindre la Russie avec une certaine nuance entre humanité et dérision, tout en égratignant les contradictions américaines. Jouant à fond de la mythologie « Top Gun » (notamment avec des scènes d’aviation bien plus stylisées que réalistes), ce nouveau film du duo Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Game Night ; Donjons & Dragons) s’impose comme un divertissement soigné qui vise moins l’originalité que le petit plaisir léger et comique.

What at first glance appears to be yet another new product tailor-made for streaming ultimately turns out to be more of an old-school buddy movie that takes us to the Soviet Union in the midst of the glasnost era, following an unlikely duo consisting of an American fighter pilot and a former KGB agent. The chemistry works particularly well between Ryan Reynolds, playing his usual comedic role, and Kenneth Branagh, who provides an equally funny and believable counterpart as a muscular, combative old taiga veteran. While the plot may seem predictable and often implausible, it nevertheless strives to portray Russia with a certain nuance – balancing humanity and satire – all while poking fun at American contradictions. Drawing heavily on the “Top Gun” mythology (especially with aviation scenes that are far more stylized than realistic), this new film from the duo Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley (Game Night; Dungeons & Dragons) stands out as a well-crafted entertainment that aims less for originality than for lighthearted, comedic fun.
