Un caissier de banque découvre un jour qu’il n’est en fait qu’un PNJ (personnage non-joueur) d’un jeu-vidéo. Il décide alors de réécrire son histoire et de faire ses propres choix dans ce monde qui lui est en réalité inconnu et sans limites. Il va tout mettre en œuvre pour le sauver à sa manière …
Le nouveau film de Shawn Levy est un excellent divertissement mêlant efficacement comédie, film d’action et une histoire intelligente avec également de très nombreuses références culturelles qui le rendent encore plus sympathique. L’intrigue mixe « The Truman Show » et « Un jour sans fin » d’un côté et le récent « Ready Player One » d’un autre. Mais l’idée développée rappelle également la saison 2 de « Westworld » avec la quête du libre-arbitre des personnages d’un jeu. Si l’histoire semble donc déjà vue, elle apporte néanmoins sa dose de nouveauté à l’aide d’un concept clair et d’une intrigue directe se déroulant dans un open-world à la « Grand Theft Auto ». L’environnement y est très riche autant en couleurs qu’en possibilités et ouvre la voie à un univers très intéressant.
Au-delà de son concept malin, de son ton léger et de son auto-dérision, le casting du film le rend également charmant avec en tête d’affiche Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) aux côtés des jeunes Jodie Comer (The Last Duel) et Joe Kerry (Stranger Things) sans oublier l’excentrique Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit). Si le film se permet également une critique de l’industrie du jeu vidéo, il joue plus avec le concept qu’il ne le critique et cherche avant tout à amuser.
Honnêtement on passe un super moment et en cela c’est tout simplement un excellent film.

A bank teller discovers one day that he is in fact an NPC (non-player character) in a video game. He then decides to rewrite his story and make his own choices in this world that is actually unknown to him and limitless. He will do everything he can to save it in his own way…
Shawn Levy’s new film is an amazing fun, mixing comedy, action and a smart story with many easter eggs that make it even more enjoyable. The plot combines « The Truman Show » and « Groundhog Day » on one side and the recent « Ready Player One » on the other. But the idea developed also reminds us of season 2 of « Westworld » with the quest for free will by the characters in a game. If the story seems already seen, it nevertheless brings its share of freshness with a clear concept and a straightforward plot taking place in an open-world like « Grand Theft Auto ». The environment is very rich in colors and possibilities and opens the door to a very interesting universe.
Beyond its high concept, its sweet tone and its self-aware humor, the cast of the film also makes it charming with the lead actor Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) alongside the young Jodie Comer (The Last Duel) and Joe Kerry (Stranger Things) as well as the eccentric Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit). If the film also allows itself to criticize the video game industry, it plays more with the concept than criticizing it and seeks above all to entertain.
Honestly, one has a great time with it and, in that respect, it is simply an excellent film.
