Après « La Daronne » à l’humour irrésistible et à la dynamique insolente, Jean-Paul Salomé retrouve Isabelle Huppert dans un drame politique sur l’histoire vraie de Maureen Kearney déléguée syndicale CFDT au sein d’Areva. Dans ce brulot politique adapté du livre de Caroline Michel-Aguirre, Jean-Paul Salomé retourne en 2012 lorsque Maureen Kearney tente de mettre en lumière un scandale industriel et politique sur le nucléaire français. Le film dépeint le combat de cette syndicaliste lanceuse d’alerte retrouvée chez elle ligotée, un couteau enfoncé dans le vagin. Il traite par la suite son long combat face à une justice qui a nié jusqu’à son statut de victime.
Si le traitement du film est quelque peu didactique et peine à concilier thriller et réquisitoire, « La Syndicaliste » n’en demeure pas moins un objet filmique saisissant. Le film qui épouse dans une première partie les aspects d’un thriller se mute en un film de procès. Bien que la transition entre les deux parties ne soit pas évidente, chacune d’elle vient porter une estoque à ces hommes de pouvoirs qui sous leur vulgaire domination et leurs « méritantes » carrières dissimule effrayés une manifeste incompétence. Portée par une grande, impassible et ambiguë Isabelle Huppert, « La Syndicaliste » est un film investi tant dans sa construction que dans sa mise en scène et nous maintient accrochés à cet effroyable scandale victime d’un silence médiatique consternant.
Au-delà de l’affaire industrielle et politique, « La Syndicaliste » est le combat d’une femme, agressée et violée dans le but de la faire taire. Maureen Kearney qui a approuvé publiquement le film dénonce le viol comme “arme politique dont le but est de détruire ses victimes.”. Le film dénonce ainsi avec force et une insistance bienvenue la délégitimation institutionnelle de la parole des femmes et les pressions psychologiques ou physiques qu’elles subissent. Un film nécessaire, à voir assurément !

After “La Daronne” with its irresistible humor and bold energy, Jean-Paul Salomé reunites with Isabelle Huppert in a political drama about the true story of Maureen Kearney, a CFDT union delegate at French nuclear company Areva. In this political thriller adapted from the book by Caroline Michel-Aguirre, Jean-Paul Salomé goes back to 2012 when Maureen Kearney tries to expose an industrial and political scandal in the French nuclear business. The film depicts the struggle of this whistleblower union leader who was found tied up in her home with a knife stuck in her vagina. It then deals with her long fight against a justice system that denied her status as a victim.
If the approach is somewhat didactic and struggles to reconcile thriller and indictment, “La Syndicaliste” (The unionist) remains a striking filmic piece. The movie, which in its first part has the aspects of a thriller, then shifts into a trial movie. Although the transition between the two parts is not obvious, each of them comes to strike a blow at these men of power who under their vulgar domination and their « deserving » careers hide a manifest ineptitude. Carried by a great, impassive and ambiguous Isabelle Huppert, “La Syndicaliste” is a film committed as much in its construction as in its direction and keeps us hooked to this appalling scandal victim of a dismaying media silence.
Beyond the industrial and political affair, “La Syndicaliste” is the fight of a woman, assaulted and raped in order to silence her. Maureen Kearney, who publicly approved the film, denounces rape as « a political weapon whose aim is to destroy its victims ». The film thus strongly condemns the institutional de-legitimization of women’s voices and the psychological and physical pressures they are subjected to, with a welcome insistence. A necessary movie, definitely worth a watch!
