Adaptée du roman de Min Jin Lee, « Pachinko » s’inscrit dans le Japon colonial du début du XXe siècle et suit, sur plusieurs générations, une famille coréenne marquée par l’exil, la domination et la transmission silencieuse des traumatismes. D’une finesse rare, la série Apple TV trouve sa force dans un dispositif linguistique aussi inédit que profondément signifiant : trilingue, elle mêle l’anglais, le coréen et le japonais, allant jusqu’à faire cohabiter les deux langues asiatiques au sein d’une même phrase, révélant par le glissement linguistique l’odeur persistante de la honte, les rapports de domination et les fractures intergénérationnelles. Ici, le changement de langue n’est jamais décoratif ; il devient un révélateur d’intention, d’expérience vécue, de position sociale ou intime. Portée par une superbe photographie et une structure narrative élégamment éclatée, « Pachinko » avance à un rythme lent, parfois éprouvant, refusant toute forme d’addiction sérielle facile. C’est une œuvre dure mais d’une grande justesse, puissante dans ce qu’elle montre comme dans ce qu’elle laisse hors champ, et profondément habitée par la mémoire.

Adapted from Min Jin Lee’s novel, “Pachinko” is set in colonial Japan in the early 20th century and follows several generations of a Korean family marked by exile, domination, and the silent transmission of trauma. With rare finesse, the Apple TV series draws its strength from a linguistic device that is as original as it is deeply meaningful: trilingual, it mixes English, Korean, and Japanese, even bringing the two Asian languages together in the same sentence, revealing through linguistic shifts the lingering scent of shame, relationships of domination, and intergenerational fractures. Here, the change of language is never ornamental; it becomes a revelation of intention, lived experience, social or intimate position. Driven by beautiful cinematography and an elegantly fragmented narrative structure, “Pachinko” moves at a slow, sometimes challenging pace, refusing any form of easy serial addictiveness. It is a harsh but highly relevant work, powerful in what it shows as well as what it leaves out, and deeply imbued with memory.
