Porté et produit par le plus célèbre duo de meilleurs amis d’Hollywood que forment Matt Damon et Ben Affleck (qui se retrouvent après « Will Hunting », « Le Dernier Duel » et « Air »), ce polar estampillé Netflix possède d’emblée un capital de sympathie non négligeable entre l’alchimie de son casting et son intrigue sous tension centrée sur une brigade des stups de Miami soupçonnée de détourner des saisies de cash. La mise en scène se veut élégante, mais parfois trop. Entre un éclairage excessivement artificiel et des scènes noyées sous une fumée décorative, « The Rip » donne souvent l’impression d’une sophistication factice, plus démonstrative que signifiante. Ce sentiment se renforce dans un décor quasi unique, cette villa louche qui finit par ressembler à une scène de théâtre, confinant le récit dans un dispositif trop écrit, trop prémédité.
Le scénario repose pourtant sur une structure solide, bien huilée, mais recouverte d’un vernis standardisé qui gomme toute aspérité. Le casting, pourtant composé d’acteurs confirmés (Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Standino Moreno, Sasha Calle & Kyle Chandler), se heurte à des personnages peu nuancés, privés de la profondeur nécessaire pour véritablement faire exister le doute incombant à chaque personnage dans une trame qui révèle trop facilement au spectateur ce que les personnages cherchent ou dissimulent.
Reste un divertissement efficace, plaisant sur le moment, mais profondément générique. Un film qui avait tous les ingrédients pour affirmer une patte singulière, mais qui s’aligne finalement sur une formule Netflix devenue répétitive. Agréable, certes, mais frustrant tant il laisse entrevoir ce qu’il aurait pu être.

The direction is sleek, but sometimes too much so. Between the excessively artificial lighting and scenes drowned in theatrical smoke, “The Rip” often gives the impression of a false sophistication that is more demonstrative than meaningful. This feeling is amplified by the almost singular setting, a shady villa that ends up resembling a theater stage, confining the narrative to a device that is overly scripted and calculated.
The script is solid and well-structured, but it’s covered with a standardized layer that smooths out any rough edges. The cast, despite being made up of talented actors (Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Catalina Standino Moreno, Sasha Calle, and Kyle Chandler), is hampered by characters that lack nuance and depth, making it difficult to truly feel the doubt that each character faces in a plot that reveals too easily to the viewer what the characters are seeking or hiding.
This leaves us with an entertaining film that is enjoyable in the moment, but ultimately deeply generic. A film that had all the ingredients to forge its distinctive stamp, but which ultimately falls into line with a Netflix formula that has become repetitive. Engaging, certainly, but frustrating in how much it teases us with what it could have been.
