Inspiré d’événements réels, « Le Dernier Duel » raconte l’histoire de deux amis devenus au fil du temps rivaux. Jean de Carrouges et Jacques Le Gris, l’un est connu pour sa bravoure et son habilité sur le champ de bataille, l’autre pour son intelligence et son éloquence. Lorsque Marguerite, la femme de Carrouges, accuse Le Gris de l’avoir agressée elle n’hésite pas à mettre sa vie en jeu pour le dénoncer. Le jugement qui s’ensuit place la destinée des trois personnages entre les mains de Dieu : ce sera le dernier duel judiciaire en France !
Vingt-quatre ans après la sortie de « Will Hunting » Matt Damon et Ben Affleck collaborent de nouveau à l’écriture d’un scénario. Ils s’associent cette fois avec Nicole Holofnecer et chacun écrit l’un des trois chapitres qui composent ce long-métrage de 2h30. C’est donc un scénario construit à la « Rashōmon » et au regard de l’intrigue ce choix s’avère très judicieux permettant d’apporter la pluralité des différents points de vue. Celle-ci reste cependant subtile en proposant un tableau plein de nuances. La répétition des scènes reste donc pertinente en particulier celle du viol faisant écho au traumatisme des victimes revivant continuellement leur agression. L’excellente Jodie Comer (Free Guy ; The Bikeriders) est au centre de cette querelle entre formidables acteurs avec Matt Damon d’un côté face à Adam Driver et Ben Affleck interprétant le comte d’Alençon.
Côté réalisation, Ridley Scott est de retour et réussit parfaitement le mélange du film de chambre et du grand spectacle avec quelques scènes de combats particulièrement violentes. La reconstitution du Moyen-Âge est présente à tous les niveaux : les costumes et décors y sont, de même que la sauvagerie des Hommes. Car en effet, « Le Dernier Duel » est avant tout un drame situé en pleine Guerre de Cent Ans mais qui explore des thèmes d’actualité avec le consentement ou le pouvoir masculin. Mis à part un court épilogue totalement inutile, c’est donc tout simplement un excellent film, très bien écrit, très fort et très juste.
S’il s’agissait du dernier film de Ridley Scott, je dirais bien que la boucle est bouclée face à son tout premier « Les duellistes », mais le réalisateur britannique de 84 ans semble infatigable : il sortira le mois ainsi prochain « House of Gucci » avec Lady Gaga et de nouveau Adam Driver …

Based on actual events, “The Last Duel” tells the story of two friends who became rivals over time. Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, one is known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield, the other for his intelligence and eloquence. When Marguerite, Carrouges’ wife, accuses Le Gris of having assaulted her, she does not hesitate to put her life on the line to denounce him. The ensuing judgment places the destiny of the three characters in the hands of God: it will be the last sanctioned duel in France!
Twenty-four years after the release of “Good Will Hunting” Matt Damon and Ben Affleck once again team up to write a script. This time, they partner up with Nicole Holofnecer and each of them writes one of the three chapters that make up this 2h30 feature film. It is therefore a storyline structured in the style of « Rashōmon » and with regard to the plot this choice proves to be very appropriate allowing to bring the plurality of different points of view. It remains however subtle by presenting a very nuanced picture. The repetition of the scenes remains relevant, especially the rape scene, which echoes the trauma of the victims who continually relive their aggression. The excellent Jodie Comer (Free Guy; The Bikeriders) is at the center of this quarrel between terrific actors with Matt Damon on one side facing Adam Driver and Ben Affleck playing the Count of Alencon.
As for the direction, Ridley Scott is back and manages perfectly to mix the chamber film and the spectacular with some particularly violent fight scenes. The reconstruction of the Middle Ages is everywhere: from the costumes and sets to the brutality of Men. Indeed, “The Last Duel” is above all a drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years’ War but which explores current themes with consent or male power. Apart from a short epilogue that is totally useless, it is simply an excellent film, very well written, very strong and very relevant.
If this was Ridley Scott’s last film, I would say that he has come full circle with his very first film “The Duelists”, but the 84-year-old British director seems to be unstoppable: he will release next month “House of Gucci” with Lady Gaga and yet again Adam Driver…
