Un film sur une chaussure ? Oui, vous ne rêvez pas !
« Air » revient sur l’incroyable histoire vraie derrière le partenariat entre Nike et le GOAT du basket Michael Jordan ayant donné lieu aux fameuses Air Jordans. C’est une véritable ‘success story’ à l’américaine à la fois pour la marque et l’athlète où l’underdog – qu’était Nike face à Converse et Adidas à l’époque – finit par gagner, idolâtrant le goût du risque et la compétition à la fois sportive et capitalistique. La scène d’ouverture introduisant le protagoniste Sonny Vaccaro, joué par un très attachant Matt Damon, porte déjà ce message subliminal qui se retrouve dans le slogan de la marque ‘Just do it’.
Plus divertissant qu’un biopic sur un deal vieux de quarante ans n’en a l’air, ce ‘feel-good movie’ se déguste sans modération grâce à un savoureux équilibre entre retour sur les faits historiques, humour et émotion. Ce qui aurait pu être un immense placement de produit devient un excellent film captivant de bout en bout mettant en scène un évènement ayant bouleversé le monde du sport et créé un dangereux précédent dans un regard méfiant sur les rouages du libéralisme actionnarial.
Pour sa cinquième réalisation, Ben Affleck s’en tient à une mise en scène classique avec une superbe esthétique sur une B.O. nous (re)plongeant dans les années 1980 et bénéficie d’un talentueux casting pour jouer un scénario avant tout porté par ses dialogues et sa verve. Le duo de « Will Hunting » se retrouve une nouvelle fois aux côtés de Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker – dont c’est le premier film depuis sept ans – et Viola Davis jouant Mme. Jordan comme ce fut la seule et unique condition de la légende de la NBA pour la production de ce film.
Mais « Air » c’est aussi le premier film du studio Artists Equity, nouvellement créé par le duo Affleck-Damon et d’ores et déjà un flop au box-office avec un seuil de rentabilité autour des $200M pour des recettes brutes ne s’élevant pas au-dessus des $90M (sans compter l’achat des droits) dans la mesure où le film n’a obtenu qu’une sortie en salles limitée. Un démarrage de qualité donc, mais encore loin d’un lancer-franc !

“Air” revisits the incredible true story behind the partnership between Nike and the GOAT of basketball Michael Jordan that led to the famous Air Jordans. It’s a true American success story for both the brand and the athlete where the underdog – that Nike was against Converse and Adidas at the time – ends up winning, worshiping the risk-taking and the competition both athletic and capitalistic. The opening scene introducing the protagonist Sonny Vaccaro, played by a very endearing Matt Damon, already carries this underlying message, which is reflected in the brand’s tagline ‘Just do it’.
Much more entertaining than a biopic on a forty-year-old business deal might sound, this feel-good movie is a great-watch thanks to a clever balance between historical facts, humor and emotion. What could have been a huge product placement becomes an excellent film, captivating from start to finish, dramatizing an event that changed the sports world and created a dangerous precedent in a leery look at the dynamics of shareholder liberalism.
For his fifth directorial venture, Ben Affleck sticks to a conventional direction with a beautiful aesthetic with a soundtrack that takes us (back) to the 1980’s and features a wonderful cast to act a script that is above all driven by its dialogue and tone. The “Good Will Hunting” duo is back together with Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker – his first film in seven years – and Viola Davis playing Mrs. Jordan as it was the one and only condition of the NBA legend for the making of this film.
But “Air” is also the first film of the Artists Equity studio, newly created by the Affleck-Damon duo and already a flop at the box-office with a break-even point around $200M for gross revenues not exceeding $90M (not counting the rights acquisition) as the film only got a limited theatrical release. Therefore, a quality start, but still far from a free throw!
