Western contemporain sur la rencontre de deux âmes tourmentées qui se découvrent.
Le capitaine Jefferson Kyle Kidd sillonne le Texas pour raconter les nouvelles du monde aux villageois, des catastrophes aux plus belles aventures locales et lointaines. L’histoire se déroule dans l’ombre de la fin de la guerre de Sécession, les soldats bleus (Nordistes) sont donc présents dans ce territoire qui leur est toujours globalement hostile. C’est alors que Kidd tombe sur une fillette de 10 ans qui semble avoir été éduquée par les Indiens mais s’appelle Johanna et aurait encore de la famille. Le Capitaine entreprend alors le voyage pour la ramener chez elle. Ces deux personnages sans foyer vont se découvrir et apprendre à se connaître dans un voyage les confrontant à leur passé.
Nouvelle réalisation de Paul Greengrass (Jason Bourne ; Bloody Sunday) disponible sur Netflix, « La Mission » est un western américain dans lequel le cinéaste britannique délaisse son habituel style de caméra à l’épaule pour un rythme lent s’approchant par moments du film contemplatif dans la veine du récent « Hostiles ». Nous avons ainsi droit à de beaux plans à travers le voyage de ces deux personnages traversant les plaines du Texas, ainsi qu’à une histoire alliant la quête personnelle et les enjeux politiques du contexte historique. Entre l’importance des racines familiales et l’amour pour un enfant, la relation entre les deux personnages donne ainsi lieu à des scènes émouvantes et une fin particulièrement touchante.
La jeune actrice allemande Helena Zengel porte le film par son excellente interprétation de la petite Johanna aux côtés de Tom Hanks – qui retrouve Paul Greengrass après « Capitaine Phillips » – dans le personnage noble du capitaine et dorénavant conteur car son métier est finalement celui-là même du cinéaste : il raconte des histoires pour sortir les gens de leur routine. Un bon western donc, plus introspectif que d’action qui marque par son réalisme accompagné de la belle B.O. de James Newton Howard.

Modern Western about the meeting of two tormented souls who discover each other.
Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels across Texas to tell villagers the news of the world, from disasters to the most beautiful local and distant adventures. The story takes place in the shadow of the Civil War’s end, the blue soldiers (Yankees) are thus present in this land that is still globally hostile to them. Then Kidd comes across a 10-year-old girl who seems to have been raised by the Indians but is called Johanna and still has a family. The Captain then undertakes the journey to bring her back home. These two homeless characters will discover and get to know each other in a journey confronting them with their past.
New film directed by Paul Greengrass (Jason Bourne; Bloody Sunday) and available on Netflix, “News of the World” is an American western in which the British filmmaker leaves his usual style of hand-held camera for a slow pace that at times approaches the contemplative film in the vein of the recent « Hostiles ». We thus get beautiful shots through the journey of these two characters across the plains of Texas, as well as a story combining the personal quest and the political stakes of the historical context. Between the importance of family roots and the love for a child, the relationship between the two characters gives rise to moving scenes and a particularly touching ending.
The young German actress Helena Zengel carries the film by her excellent interpretation of the little Johanna alongside Tom Hanks – who reunites with Paul Greengrass after “Captain Phillips” – in the noble character of the captain and henceforth storyteller as his profession is ultimately that of the filmmaker: he tells stories to take people out of their routine. A good western therefore, more introspective than action, which stands out for its realism alongside the beautiful soundtrack by James Newton Howard.
