New York 1954, atteint du syndrome Gilles de la Tourette, le jeune détective privé Lionel Esrog se lance dans une sombre enquête au cœur de Brooklyn, entre les clubs de jazz et les avenues de la grande pomme. C’est dans une veine propre au film noir, qu’Edward Norton signe son premier film de fiction prometteur d’une belle et longue carrière derrière la caméra. L’interprète de Monty Mogan dans « La 25ème heure » de Spike Lee rend ici hommage à un style, à une histoire, à un pan du cinéma américain. Un genre que certains qualifieraient de passé de mode. C’est en utilisant les codes du film noir que le réalisateur américain nous entraîne dans un film haletant, sombre et agréablement long. En effet, on se laisse emporter par une époque, par un grand casting et une bande originale renversante. Mais si le cadre est d’un travail remarquable, le récit, lui, se prend dans des rouages pour la plupart déjà vu. Mais cela n’en fait pas une déception, car toujours dans un esprit du film noir, Edward Norton y donne un goût de modernité. Amateur ou non du genre, « Brooklyn Affairs » vous emmène au cœur de ses ruelles, où traîne un parfum de poésie mélancolique.

New York 1954, suffering from the Tourette syndrome, the young private detective Lionel Esrog embarks on a dark investigation in the heart of Brooklyn, between the jazz clubs and the avenues of the big apple. It is in a vein specific to film noir, that Edward Norton signs his first fictional film promising of a beautiful and long career behind the camera. Monty Mogan’s performer in Spike Lee’s “25th hour” pays tribute here to a style, a story, a piece of American cinema. A genre that some would call outdated. It is by using the codes of film noir that the American director leads us into a breathless, dark and pleasantly long film. Indeed, we let ourselves be carried away by an era, by a great cast ensemble and a breathtaking soundtrack. But if the setting is a remarkable achievement, the story isn’t very original, most of which have already been seen. But that doesn’t make it a disappointment, because always in the spirit of film noir, Edward Norton gives it a taste of modernity. Whether or not you are an aficionado of this genre, “Motherless Brooklyn” takes you to the heart of its narrow streets, where a scent of melancholic poetry lingers.
