En quelques mots :
S’il apparaît à première vue comme un petit polar américain diffusé directement en streaming (sur Prime en France), « The Order » nous surprend vite par son style et son sujet. Présenté à la Mostra de Venise, ce film de Justin Kurzel (Nitram ; Les Crimes de Snowtown) nous plonge dans les années 1980 entre l’Idaho et l’État de Washington au sein de la nation aryenne. Bien plus sombre, plus lent et plus sérieux que beaucoup de films policiers de plateforme, c’est en fait un solide polar historique sur une enquête fédérale autour de braquages et de meurtres d’une petite communauté de suprémacistes faisant scission avec leurs frères de race blanche trop attentistes. La photographie d’Adam Arkapaw (True Detective S1 ; The King) lui confère de plus un certain cachet avec son atmosphère fantomatique, désenchantée et poisseuse dans une mise en scène anxiogène et étouffante au gré de scènes d’action brutes et sèches. Portée par de bons personnages et de bons acteurs (Jude Law, Nicholas Houlot, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smolett), c’est une histoire vraie saisissante et sous tension sur la violence américaine et son racisme intrinsèque qui résonne malheureusement encore aujourd’hui !

Although at first glance it appears to be a small American crime thriller released directly on streaming (on Prime Video in France), “The Order” quickly surprises us with its style and subject matter. Presented at the Venice Film Festival, this film directed by Justin Kurzel (Nitram; Snowtown) brings us back to the 1980s, between Idaho and Washington State, to the heart of the Aryan nation. Much darker, slower and more serious than many platform crime dramas, this is in fact a solid historical thriller about a federal investigation into the robberies and murders of a small community of white supremacists splitting from their overly wait-and-see white brethren. The cinematography from Adam Arkapaw (True Detective S1; The King) lends it a certain cachet, with its ghostly, disenchanted and grimy atmosphere in an anxiety-inducing, suffocating staging featuring raw, gritty action scenes. Driven by good characters and actors (Jude Law, Nicholas Houlot, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smolett), this is a gripping and tense true story of American violence and its inherent racism, which unfortunately still resonates today!
