Ce film sorti en mars dernier sur Apple TV+, retrace l’histoire vraie de Bernard Garrett un jeune texan noir parti vivre avec sa famille à Los Angeles pour y faire fortune. Oui, il s’agit bien d’un Afro-Américain cherchant à faire fortune dans un monde de Blancs. Mais le film est en réalité centré sur un trio de personnages, Bernard et son associé Joe Morris qui ont pour ambition de détenir des terrains initialement réservés aux Blancs puis d’acheter leurs banques, et Matt Steiner un jeune Blanc leur servant de façade.
Ce nouveau film de George Nolfi (« l’Agence »), est donc certes un biopic sur une carrière de businessmen mais avec un brin d’éléments thriller dans la mesure où le personnage de Matt Steiner doit être formé aux codes de la haute société pour l’infiltrer ! Malgré un rythme lent et le fait que le film suive un modèle de biopics très classique, il reste captivant. Cela est dû en partie à son intrigue qui raconte le courage et l’audace de deux hommes mais également au talent du trio d’acteurs qui interprètent ces personnages avec Anthony Mackie en tête, Samuel L. Jackson toujours aussi appréciable et bien sûr l’excellent Nicholas Hoult.
S’il est vrai que le message n’est pas nouveau, les films inspirés d’histoires vraies dénonçant le racisme sont déjà nombreux, il s’agit ici également de suivre la carrière d’un talentueux jeune texan et du génie de ces hommes qui ont su manœuvrer dans un monde de Blancs pour le rendre également au service des Noirs. Le rôle de la femme de Bernard, Eunice, est de plus, là, pour rappeler la place des femmes et ne pas en faire uniquement un combat Black vs White en faisant donc un film politique dont le message peut encore et toujours être d’actualité, en particulier avec les mouvements de protestation actuels aux États-Unis.

This film, released last March on Apple TV+, tells the true story of Bernard Garrett, a young black Texan who went to live with his family in Los Angeles to make his big money. Yes, it’s about an African-American looking to make a fortune in a white man’s world. But the film is actually centered on a trio of characters, Bernard and his partner Joe Morris, who have the ambition to own land initially reserved for whites and then to buy their banks, and Matt Steiner, a young white man, serving as their façade.
This new film directed by George Nolfi (« The Adjustment Bureau »), is a biopic about a career of businessmen, but with a touch of thriller elements in that the character of Matt Steiner has to be trained in the codes of high society to infiltrate it! Despite a slow pace and the fact that the film follows a very classic biopic pattern, it remains captivating. This is due in part to its plot, which tells the story of the courage and daring of two men, but also to the talent of the trio of actors who play these characters with Anthony Mackie in the lead, Samuel L. Jackson always so enjoyable and of course the excellent Nicholas Hoult.
If it is true that the message isn’t new, there are already many films inspired by true stories denouncing racism, it is also a question here of following the career of a talented young Texan and the genius of these men who knew how to maneuver in a white world to make it also serve the blacks. The role of Bernard’s wife, Eunice, is moreover, there to remind the place of women and not to make it only a black vs. white fight and thus making a political film whose message can still and always be relevant today, especially with the current protest movements in the United States.
