Ayant survolé la pandémie, Tom Cruise est enfin de retour dans les salles obscures !
Trente-six ans après avoir incarné le pilote Pete Mitchell dit Maverick dans l’iconique « Top Gun » de Tony Scott, la star américaine remonte dans son F/A-18 pour une suite particulièrement réussie. Maverick est toujours dans la Marine américaine. Il continue à repousser ses limites en tant que pilote d’essai et refuse de monter en grade pour continuer à pouvoir voler. De retour à l’académie, il est chargé de former un détachement de jeunes diplômés pour une opération aux airs de « Mission impossible » et au cours de laquelle il retrouve le fils de son défunt ami Goose. Entre ses fantômes du passé et des ennemis supérieurs techniquement, son avenir est plus qu’incertain …
« Top Gun : Maverick » s’impose comme LE film grand spectacle de l’été. L’acteur de « Rain Man » ou encore « Eyes Wide Shut » prend en effet les choses en main comme avec Ethan Hunt et accentue le poids de l’aviation dans ce film avec des cascades absolument époustouflantes réalisées non seulement en live-action, mais aussi avec les acteurs et par Tom Cruise. La préparation et l’entraînement qu’a nécessité ce film sont juste dingues pour pouvoir former les acteurs aux forces G et au placement des six caméras IMAX dans le cockpit. Digne descendant des « Chevaliers du Ciel », le résultat est tout simplement magnifique.
Pour une suite à plus de trente ans d’écart c’est donc une véritable réussite, « Maverick » conserve l’essence de « Top Gun » mais sans excès de nostalgie ou de fan service et revitalise la saga avec un ton comique, un rythme soutenu à plus de Mach 3 et un regard auto-conscient avec un héros qui avoue ne pas savoir comment lâcher prise. Mais le ton des années 1980 reste bien présent notamment dans les scènes de romance ou lors d’une scène de Beach football qui boostera les abonnements de Basic Fit pour le plaisir de toutes et tous. Le retour de Val Kilmer est par ailleurs géré avec beaucoup de justesse face au cancer de la gorge qu’a subi l’acteur.
Si l’intrigue comporte quelques problèmes de logique d’un point de vue technique, militaire ou stratégique, l’histoire reste fermement ancrée dans un contexte crédible et actuel particulièrement bien cadré sans trop s’attarder sur le contexte mais suffisamment explicité pour rendre l’ensemble cohérent. Au-delà de ces quelques aspects irréalistes ou futuristes, les enjeux et la mission sont donc clairs ce qui permet de se concentrer sur les incroyables figures réalisées par les chasseurs.
Au final le scénario reste assez conventionnel et ne révolutionne rien mais le film lui divertit à souhait et s’impose comme une véritable prouesse technique et visuelle qui plaira à un public très large et qui peut d’ailleurs être vu sans l’original.

Thirty-six years after playing the pilot Pete Mitchell aka Maverick in Tony Scott’s iconic “Top Gun”, the American star is back in his F/A-18 for a particularly successful sequel. Maverick is still in the US Navy. He keeps pushing his limits as a test pilot and refuses to move up in rank to keep flying. Back at the academy, he’s tasked with training a detachment of young graduates for a “Mission Impossible”-like operation in which he reunites with the son of his late friend Goose. Between his ghosts of the past and technically superior foes, his future is highly uncertain…
“Top Gun: Maverick” is THE summer blockbuster. The actor of “Rain Man” and “Eyes Wide Shut” indeed leads the way as with Ethan Hunt and enhances the focus on aerial stunts in this film with absolutely breathtaking scenes performed not only in live-action, but also with the actors and by Tom Cruise. The preparation and training required for this film is just insane in order to train the actors in the G forces and the positioning of the six IMAX cameras in the cockpit. Worthy descendant of “Sky Fighters”, the end result is simply stunning.
For a legacy sequel this is a real success. “Maverick” keeps the essence of “Top Gun” but without any excess of nostalgia or fan service and reinvigorates the saga with a comic tone, a steady pace at more than Mach 3 and a self-aware look at a hero who admits not knowing how to let go. But the tone of the 1980’s is still very much alive, especially in the romance scenes or during a beach football scene that will boost Fitness centers’ subscriptions for everyone’s delight. The return of Val Kilmer is also properly managed given the throat cancer the actor has suffered.
If the plot has some logical problems from a technical, military or strategic point of view, the story remains firmly anchored in a credible and current context particularly well framed without dwelling too much on the setting but sufficiently explained to make the story coherent. Beyond these few unrealistic or futuristic aspects, the stakes and the mission are clear, which allows us to focus on the incredible stunts performed by the pilots.
Ultimately, the script remains rather conventional and breaks no new ground, but the film is highly entertaining and stands out as a real technical and visual feat that will charm a very wide audience and that can be seen even without the original.
