En quelques mots :
Nous sommes en 50 avant Jésus-Christ en pleine Gaulerie (attention, pour le public né avant Platon, ‘golri : terme verlan pour dire rigoler’, ndlr) ! Vingt ans après le cultissime « Mission Cléopâtre », Alain Chabat est de retour chez nos irréductibles Gaulois dans cette minisérie d’animation en cinq épisodes de 25 minutes adaptant le 7e tome en y ajoutant quelques éléments d’autres opus. Si les étapes du récit sont évidemment les mêmes que celles de la BD dont il est adapté, le chemin entre ces étapes prend quelques (larges) libertés. César cherche à y conquérir ce qu’il reste de la France Libre en tournant les lois à son avantage dans un festival ininterrompu de blagues reprenant le même mélange savoureux de vannes qu’en Egypte avec quelques blagues référencées (beaucoup moins que chez Canet heureusement), beaucoup de jeux de mots, de comique de situation, ainsi que de blagues d’actualité liées à la politique, aux réseaux sociaux ou au climat. Avec son visuel pop mêlant 3D et 2D, son intrigue légère (enfantine par moments) et très comique, l’ensemble s’avère homogène et très réussi pour passer un très bon moment.

The year is 50 B.C., and Gaulerie (French pun to refer both to the country and the verb ‘to laugh’) is in full swing! Twenty years after the cult classic “Mission Cleopatra”, Alain Chabat heads back to the Gauls in this five-episode, 25-minute animated mini-series, adapting the 7th volume and adding elements from other opuses. While the story’s key steps are obviously the same as those in the comic book from which it was adapted, the path between them takes a few (broad) liberties. César sets out to conquer what’s left of Free France, twisting the laws to his advantage in a non-stop fest of jokes featuring the same delightful mix of jokes as back in Egypt, with a few referenced jokes (much less than with Canet, thankfully), plenty of puns and character humor, as well as up-to-date jokes on politics, social networks and the climate. With its pop visuals blending 3D and 2D, and its light (at times a bit childlike), highly funny plot, this is a wonderfully coherent and successful experience that’s bound to make for a great time.
