Une odyssée palestinienne …
Mustafa vit d’un côté du mur, sa femme Salwa et ses enfants vivent de l’autre. Le mur d’enceinte d’Israël en Cisjordanie sépare cette famille de seulement 200 mètres. Mais ces 200 mètres deviennent une éternité et un véritable fardeau pour la famille qui essaye de vivre comme tout le monde du mieux possible. Mais quand Mustafa apprend que son fils a été blessé de l’autre côté, il va remuer ciel et terre pour rejoindre sa famille. Commence alors un voyage à travers les checkpoints riche en imprévus et en contretemps ne laissant place qu’à l’improvisation et au calme.
Entre drame social, road-movie politique et thriller haletant, « 200 mètres » est un excellent premier film du réalisateur palestinien Ameen Nayfeh. A la croisée du film à suspense et du documentaire, il s’agit d’un film intense portant sur un sujet assez tragique dans un contexte brûlant et sous un angle intéressant. Le long-métrage témoigne de l’absurdité au quotidien de la vie sous occupation israélienne, mais explore aussi tout l’écosystème qui s’est développé autour du mur entre réseaux de passeurs et conflits intra-palestiniens. Un film critique, donc, mais indirectement : ce n’est pas un réquisitoire mais bien un film humain plein de tendresse autour d’un père qui cherche à rejoindre un fils à l’hôpital.
Il se distingue principalement par son style épuré. C’est brut. C’est très réaliste. Et cela est notamment permis par son décor, tourné au plus près du véritable mur, mais également grâce à un casting très juste dans son ensemble avec en premier rôle l’acteur palestinien Ali Suliman (Jack Ryan) impressionnant dans un rôle gardant quelques mystères mais tout en nuances. Sa performance remporta plusieurs prix en festivals et « 200 mètres » remporta également le prix du public à la Mostra de Venise.
Un très beau film encore et toujours d’actualité, malheureusement !

A Palestinian odyssey…
Mustafa lives on one side of the wall, his wife Salwa and his children live on the other. Israel’s wall in the West Bank separates this family by only 200 meters. But those 200 meters become an eternity and a real burden for the family who tries to live like everyone else as best they can. But when Mustafa learns that his son has been injured on the other side, he will move heaven and earth to join his family. Then begins a journey through the checkpoints full of unexpected events and setbacks that leave no room for anything but improvisation and calm.
Between social drama, political road movie and gripping thriller, « 200 meters » is an excellent first film by Palestinian director Ameen Nayfeh. At the crossroads of a suspense and documentary film, it is an intense film dealing with a rather tragic subject in a burning context and from an interesting angle. The film shows the daily absurdity of life under Israeli occupation, but also explores the whole economy that has developed around the wall between smuggling networks and intra-Palestinian conflicts. A critical film, therefore, but indirectly: it is not an indictment but a human film full of tenderness about a father who tries to reach a son in a hospital.
It is mainly characterized by its simple style. It is raw. It is very realistic. And this is achieved in particular by its setting, shot as close as possible to the real wall, but also thanks to a very good cast as a whole with the Palestinian actor Ali Suliman (Jack Ryan) in the lead role, impressive in a role that retains some mystery but is full of nuances. His performance earned him several awards at festivals and « 200 meters » also won the audience award at the Venice Film Festival.
A very beautiful film, still relevant today, unfortunately!
