Un film qui ne peut vous laisser indifférent !
Le film suit Fern, une femme à la soixantaine qui, après avoir tout perdu dans la Grande Récession, entreprend un voyage vivant en nomade des temps modernes dans son van. Le film n’a pas vraiment une intrigue plus étoffée que celle-ci, nous suivons simplement Fern dans ses rencontres, galères et emplois temporaires.
« Nomadland » se distingue ainsi par son atmosphère faite de magnifiques plans dans les étendues de l’Ouest américain, un rythme lent au gré de son voyage et la sublime musique de Ludovico Einaudi au piano qui nous berce. Le film n’est donc absolument pas vide et nous fait progressivement découvrir la vie de ces nouveaux nomades, leur passé et leurs motivations. Il aborde ainsi un sujet social sans toutefois en faire un plaidoyer. C’est un très beau film dont l’ensemble visuel, sonore et narratif donne des frissons.
Écrit, réalisé et monté par Chloé Zhao, le film est inspiré du livre de Jessica Bruder, et s’impose comme le film le plus récompensé cette année avec notamment le Lion d’Or à Venise, l’Oscar du Meilleur film, celui de meilleure actrice et celui de meilleure réalisation. La réalisatrice d’origine chinoise devient alors seulement la seconde femme à remporter cette statuette après Kathryn Bigelow et la première d’origine étrangère. Son premier film « The Rider » avait déjà attiré l’attention de Kevin Feige de Marvel qui lui avait donné les rênes du film « Eternals » qui sortira cet automne. Elle continue donc d’époustoufler et attire déjà les studios avec également le projet d’un nouveau « Dracula » sous sa direction.
Si l’ambiance du film joue sur nos sens, Frances McDormand porte bel et bien le film à elle toute seule. Elle est en effet dans absolument toutes les scènes du film et sa performance dénuée de tout glamour et d’emphase nous transporte directement dans ce monde. Si l’ensemble du casting est si convaincant c’est parce qu’à part David Strathairn, tous les acteurs incarnent leur véritable personnage ancrant donc encore plus profondément le film dans la réalité qu’il décrit.
« Nomadland » est donc très clairement un nouveau succès pour le studio Searchlight Pictures, production de films d’auteur et devenu spécialiste des films à Oscars avec 5 victoires en 13 années d’activité.

PS : Après avoir déjà remporté la statuette pour « Fargo » et « Les panneaux de la vengeance », Frances McDormand rejoint le club des triplement couronnées avec Meryl Streep et Ingrid Bergman. Mais contrairement à ces deux dernières, elle en a quant à elle remporté trois pour des premiers rôles égalant donc le grand Daniel Day-Lewis et seulement derrière les quatre statuettes de Katharine Hepburn.
A film that cannot leave you unmoved!
The film follows Fern, a woman in her sixties who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. The film doesn’t really have a plot more fleshed out than this, we simply follow Fern through her encounters, hardships and temporary jobs.
The film stands out for its atmosphere made of beautiful shots in the vastness of the American West, a slow pace along the way and the beautiful soundtrack of Ludovico Einaudi on the piano that lulls us. The film is not empty at all and makes us gradually discover the life of these new nomads, their past and their motivations. « Nomadland » thus tackles a social issue but without making it a plea. It is a very beautiful film whose visual, sound and narrative combination gives you chills.
Written, directed and edited by Chloe Zhao, the film is based on the book by Jessica Bruder, and is the most awarded film of the year with the Golden Lion in Venice, the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Directing. The Chinese-born director becomes only the second woman to win this statuette after Kathryn Bigelow and the first of foreign origin. Her first film « The Rider » had already attracted the attention of Marvel‘s Kevin Feige, who gave her the reins of the film » Eternals », which will be released this fall. She continues to amaze and is already attracting studios with the project of a new « Dracula » under her direction.
If the vibe of the film affects our senses, Frances McDormand carries the film well on her own. She is indeed in absolutely every scene of the film and her performance devoid of glamour and drama transports us directly into this world. If the whole cast is so convincing, it is because except for David Strathairn, all the actors embody their real character, thus rooting the film even more deeply in the reality it depicts.
« Nomadland » is clearly a new triumph for Searchlight Pictures, a studio that produces auteur films and has become an Oscar expert with five wins in its 13 years of activity.

PS: After having already won the statuette for « Fargo » and « Revenge », Frances McDormand joins the club of the triple crowned with Meryl Streep and Ingrid Bergman. But unlike the latter two, she won three for leading roles, thus equaling the great Daniel Day-Lewis and only behind the four statuettes held by Katharine Hepburn.
