Dans un film au rythme haletant et à la réalisation resserrée, Philip Barantini nous plonge dans un restaurant étoilé londonien, victime d’un système d’épuisement où la vitrine à remplacer le goût.
Nous sommes le dernier vendredi avant Noël, le restaurant du chef Andy Jones est complet, mais il n’y a plus de turbot, il a oublié de passer commande. Le film nous entraine dès les premières minutes dans une ambiance oppressante où le semblant de légèreté se noie dans un profond malaise. Dans ce système à flux tendu, les esprits et les corps sont à un point de rupture que le réalisateur capture avec une énergie renversante. Filmé en un véritable plan séquence de 1h34, le film du réalisateur britannique marque avec force ce début d’année cinématographique.
Accompagné par un humour saillant aux répliques épicées, « The chef » nous happe dans son huis clos où le spectateur surmené perd pied au rythme de ses protagonistes. Réglé avec une précision chirurgicale, « The Chef » a nécessité 37 comédiens et pas moins d’une centaine de figurants au cœur d’un plateau sans le moindre angle mort. Au cours de ce service chaotique, Andy, le chef, se laisse emporter peu à peu et révèle une part sombre de son personnage. Si la dynamique du film se révèle efficace, c’est qu’elle est en dehors de la technique portée par d’excellents comédiens. Stephen Graham et Vinette Robinson notamment livrent sur ce plateau de remarquables performances.
Et dans cet éloge de l’épuisement au bord de la rupture, Philip Barantini capture sans aucune prétention les soupirs inaudibles et les regards abandonnés.

In a film with a breathless rhythm and a tight direction, Philip Barantini plunges us into a starred London restaurant, victim of a system of exhaustion where the window display replaces the taste.
It is the last Friday before Christmas, the restaurant of chef Andy Jones is full, but there is no more turbot, he forgot to order. From the very first minutes, the film takes us into an oppressive atmosphere where the semblance of lightness drowns in a deep malaise. In this just-in-time system, minds and bodies are at a breaking point that the director captures with a stunning energy. Filmed in a real long uncut shot of 1h34, the British director’s film marks with force this beginning of the cinematographic year.
Accompanied by a salient humor with spicy retorts, « Boiling Point » catches us in its closed-door setting where the overworked spectator loses his footing at the rhythm of its protagonists. Set with surgical precision, « Boiling Point » required 37 actors and no less than a hundred extras in the heart of a set without the slightest blind spot. During this chaotic service, Andy, the chef, gets carried away little by little and reveals a dark part of his character. If the dynamic of the film is effective, it is because it is carried by excellent actors. Graham Norton and Vinette Robinson, in particular, deliver remarkable performances on this set.
And in this eulogy of exhaustion on the verge of breaking down, Philip Barantini captures without any pretension the inaudible sighs and the abandoned glances.
