Biopic d’une légende du jazz.
En 1939, Lady Day entame sa désormais célèbre chanson « Strange Fruit », véritable réquisitoire contre le racisme portant sur le lynchage des Noirs dans le sud et qui se démarque donc de son répertoire habituel plus centré sur les histoires d’amour. Le gouvernement souhaite ne plus la voir chanter cette chanson, ce qu’elle refuse et elle devient alors une cible à faire tomber. Le FBI se charge alors de l’inculper pour sa consommation de drogue lui permettant d’échapper un temps à la difficulté de la vie et de ses souffrances personnelles.
Réalisé par Lee Daniels (Precious ; Le majordome), « Billie Holiday, une affaire d’Etat » est donc avant tout un film politique et social. Certes, il s’agit de la vie d’une légende du jazz, mais si la musique y est bien présente, nous ne suivons qu’une partie spécifique de sa vie, post seconde guerre mondiale, et plus particulièrement ses démêlés avec le FBI. C’est un film historique qui cherche à nous interroger sur le présent, l’époque de George Floyd, avec pour sujet central le lynchage des Noirs notamment au travers de sa chanson « Strange Fruit », et aujourd’hui via une loi toujours pas adoptée par le Sénat.
Un film intéressant d’un point de vue politique, social mais également musical car il ne faut en rien enlever le talent à cette courageuse femme brillamment interprétée par Andra Day pour son premier rôle au cinéma. C’est bien sa performance qui ressort in fine comme principale qualité du film. La jeune chanteuse californienne a d’ailleurs remporté le Golden Globe de la meilleure actrice 2020 pour ce rôle de composition entre une femme forte face aux autorités et luttant contre ses dépendances aux drogues et aux amours déchirants.

In 1939, Lady Day performed her now famous song « Strange Fruit », a real indictment of racism, about the lynching of black people in the South, and therefore unlike her usual repertoire, which was more focused on love stories. The government did not want her to sing this song anymore, which she refused, and she became a target to take down. The FBI then charges her for her drug use, which allowed her to escape for a while from the difficulties of life and her personal suffering.
Directed by Lee Daniels (Precious; The Butler), « The United States vs. Billie Holiday » is above all a political and social film. Of course, it is about the life of a jazz legend, but if the music is certainly there, we only follow a specific part of her life, post-World War II, and particularly her troubles with the FBI. It is a historical film that seeks to question us on the present, the era of George Floyd with for main subject the lynching of black people especially through her song « Strange Fruit » and today with a law still not passed by the Senate.
An interesting film from a political, social but also musical point of view because we must not take away the talent of this courageous woman brilliantly portrayed by Andra Day for her first role in movies. It is indeed her performance than stands out as the highest quality of the film. The young Californian singer won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in 2020 for this role of a strong woman facing the authorities and struggling against her drug addiction and heartbreaking love.
