La nouvelle série à succès de Netflix « The Night Agent » met en scène un agent subalterne du FBI qui travaille au sous-sol de la Maison Blanche, chargé de répondre à un téléphone qui ne sonne jamais jusqu’à la nuit où cela se produit le propulsant dans un vaste complot suggérant la présence d’une taupe au sein de la Maison Blanche. Une périlleuse chasse à l’homme commence alors pour arrêter une conspiration effrénée qui mènera à terme jusqu’au Bureau Ovale.
Pour cette série adaptée du roman éponyme de Matthew Quirk (2020), Shawn Ryan (S.W.A.T.) reprend sa formule déjà utilisée dans « The Shield » mêlant habilement action, suspense et développement de personnage. Le scénario n’est pas vraiment original mais s’avère particulièrement captivant, bien construit entre retournements de situations, cliffhangers en fin d’épisodes, et build-up de tension. Les personnages principaux sont attachants et convaincants avec Gabriel Basso dans le rôle du jeune agent pris dans les engrenages du pouvoir, la jeune actrice néo-zélandaise Luciane Buchanan dans le rôle du témoin en détresse finalement plein de ressources, et Hong Chau (The Whale ; The Menu) en cheffe de cabinet finalement plus nuancée qu’il n’y paraît.
Après l’impressionnante affluence lors de sa première semaine de diffusion, Netflix a d’ores et déjà commandé une seconde saison à Sony qui devrait a priori débarquer sur nos écrans d’ici 2024. En somme, un thriller d’action palpitant qui convainc tout fan d’espionnage et en particulier pour ses qualités de binge-watching !
Netflix‘s new hit show “The Night Agent” features a low-level FBI agent working in the basement of the White House, tasked with answering a phone that never rings until the night it does, propelling him into a vast conspiracy suggesting the presence of a mole within the White House. A risky manhunt then begins to stop a frantic plot that will eventually lead to the Oval Office.
For this series adapted from Matthew Quirk’s novel of the same name (2020), Shawn Ryan (S.W.A.T.) uses the same formula he used in “The Shield”, skillfully mixing action, suspense and character development. The script is not really original but proves to be particularly captivating, well-structured between twists and turns, cliffhangers at the end of the episodes, and tension build-up throughout. The main characters are endearing and compelling, with Gabriel Basso as the young agent caught up in the spiral of power, the young New Zealand actress Luciane Buchanan as the distressed witness who’s in the end more resourceful than expected, and Hong Chau (The Whale; The Menu) as the chief of staff who’s more nuanced than she looks.
After the impressive ratings during its first week of release, Netflix has already ordered a second season to Sony, which should land on our screens by 2024. Overall, a gripping action thriller that will win over any spy fan, especially for its binge-watching value!
