La première saison de cette série d’espionnage explosive de Netflix était particulièrement captivante et haletante grâce à ses enjeux sous tension, ses nombreux retournements de situation et ses personnages attachants. Cette seconde saison ne révolutionne aucunement ni le genre ni sa propre intrigue et poursuit dans cette veine de thriller conspirationniste d’une Amérique post-11-septembre avec son héros sacrificiel, de l’action quasi non-stop et des rebondissements à tous les coins de rue de New-York City (après Washington en saison 1, et qui sait peut-être Los Angeles en saison 3 ?).
On retrouve donc la même formule, avec des épisodes structurés selon le même format avec un flash-back à chaque début d’épisode renseignant sur un personnage, des cliffhangers à chaque fin d’épisode nous happant dans l’histoire, et des méchants toujours aussi unidimensionnels et assez faibles. Mais le parcours du héros est cette fois plus nuancé et l’ampleur du conflit est étendue avec une enquête qui débute en Thaïlande pour se conclure aux Nations Unies. Il y est question à la fois de taupe à l’Ambassade iranienne, de criminel de guerre européen, de courtier en renseignements, d’armes chimiques et d’élections présidentielles !
Si la dynamique est légèrement différente qu’en saison 1, on retrouve néanmoins rapidement notre duo central (Gabriel Basso & Luciane Buchanan) autour de nouveaux rôles joués notamment par Amanda Warren, Keon Alexander, Louis Herthum, et Arienne Mandi (Tatami). Il ne s’agit plus uniquement de survivre, protéger un témoin, et démasquer les coupables, il faut maintenant enquêter, surveiller et infiltrer. En faisant converger ces nouveaux personnages et les différents enjeux, la série crée ainsi une intrigue prenante très efficace qui poursuit le caractère divertissant et très agréable à regarder et (plus spécifiquement) à binge-watcher. En somme, c’est donc une très bonne seconde saison qui réussit de plus sa conclusion en présageant un retour au cœur du pouvoir présidentiel américain pour la suite. Si saison 3 il y a (ce qui devrait être confirmé dans les prochaines semaines), elle s’annonce donc palpitante …
The first season of this explosive spy series from Netflix was particularly thrilling and gripping thanks to its high stakes, numerous plot twists and engaging characters. This second season in no way reinvents the wheel, and continues along the same lines as a post-9/11 conspiracy thriller with a self-sacrificing hero, non-stop action and twists and turns around every corner in New York City (after Washington in season 1, and who knows, maybe Los Angeles in season 3?).
So, we get the same formula, with episodes structured identically, with a flashback at the start of each episode giving background information on a character, cliffhangers at the end of each episode keeping us hooked into the story, and villains as one-dimensional and fairly weak as ever. But this time the hero’s journey is more nuanced, and the scope of the conflict is expanded with an investigation that begins in Thailand and ends at the United Nations. It involves both a mole in the Iranian Embassy, a European war criminal, an intelligence broker, chemical weapons as well as presidential elections!
While the dynamic is slightly different from season 1, we soon find our central duo (Gabriel Basso & Luciane Buchanan) back in action, with new characters played by Amanda Warren, Keon Alexander, Louis Herthum and Arienne Mandi (Tatami). It’s no longer just about surviving, protecting a witness and unmasking the bad guys, it’s now a matter of investigation, surveillance and infiltration. By bringing together these new characters and the various stakes involved, the series creates a highly compelling and efficient plot that continues to keep the series entertaining and highly enjoyable to watch and (more specifically) binge-watch. All in all, it’s a very good second season, which also successfully wraps up by foreshadowing a return to the very heart of American presidential power for what’s to come. If there is a season 3 (which should be confirmed in the next few weeks), it is bound to be a thrilling one …
