Ce thriller politique de grande qualité disponible sur Netflix s’est rapidement fait une place parmi les institutions du genre grâce à un judicieux équilibre entre tension, rhétorique et comique.
A la suite d’un incident près des côtes iraniennes, la nouvelle ambassadrice américaine débarque à Londres avec son mari, ancien diplomate réputé, et va vite transformer la capitale britannique en Kaboul européen entre jeux de pouvoir, géopolitique, espionnage et affaires de cœur. Ces ‘négociations musclées’ – pour citer un certain chevalier Jedi – nous plongent dans le monde des Relations internationales, certes avec moins de finesse et de réalisme que « Borgen », mais dans une intrigue très bien écrite mêlant alliances et manipulations dans des problématiques actuelles (Russie, Wagner, Afghanistan) s’inscrivant fermement dans le contexte politique récent des Etats-Unis et Royaume-Uni tout en conservant suffisamment de fantaisie dans le jeu diplomatique pour maintenir la fiction au pouvoir. C’est à la fois juste et moderne, le tout sous tension et avec une touche d’humour transformant les crises internationales en aventures divertissantes.
Créée par Debora Cahn, « La Diplomate » s’impose avant tout par son très bon scénario, avec une intrigue bien ficelée et de savoureux dialogues, mais bénéficie également d’un talentueux casting avec en tête le duo Keri Russell (« The Americans » ; « MI : 3 » ; et récemment dans un rôle radicalement différent dans « Crazy Bear ») et Rufus Sewell dont l’alchimie de couple est excellente et porte véritablement la série. Si la réalisation ne se distingue pas spécialement pour son esthétique, elle brille dans sa direction d’acteurs et son montage maintenant un rythme soutenu entre joutes verbales et cliffhangers nous faisant traverser la crise à grande vitesse. Si la série se distingue en chamboulant l’imaginaire collectif d’une diplomatie de noblesse, elle reste néanmoins cohérente et crédible tout du long jusqu’à une conclusion malheureusement assez invraisemblable. L’ensemble reste cependant palpitant et nous laisse sur une troublante transmission radio lors du générique de fin jouant astucieusement avec le concept de scène post-générique.
Après ces huit premiers épisodes très prometteurs, Netflix n’a pas tardé à renouveler la série pour une seconde saison d’ores et déjà prévue pour l’année prochaine !
This great political thriller available on Netflix has quickly earned a spot among the best of the genre thanks to a fine balance between tension, rhetoric and comedy.
In the wake of a dramatic incident off the coast of Iran, the new U.S. ambassador lands in London with her husband, a former top diplomat, and quickly turns the British capital into a European Kabul filled with power struggles, geopolitics, espionage and love affairs. These ‘aggressive negotiations’ – to quote a certain Jedi knight – bring us into the world of International Relations, albeit with less finesse and realism than “Borgen”, but in a very well written plot mixing alliances and manipulations in contemporary issues (Russia, Wagner, Afghanistan) firmly in line with the recent political context of the United States and the United Kingdom while keeping enough fantasy in the diplomatic game to keep fiction in power. It’s both accurate and modern, with tension and a touch of humor turning international crises into fun ventures.
Created by Debora Cahn, “The Diplomat” stands out above all for its very good script, with a well-crafted plot and delightful dialogues, but also benefits from a talented cast led by the duo Keri Russell (“The Americans”; “MI: 3”; and recently in a radically different role in “Cocaine Bear”) and Rufus Sewell, whose chemistry as a couple is excellent and really drives the show. If the direction is not particularly noteworthy for its aesthetics, it shines in its actor’s guidance and its editing maintaining a strong pace between verbal jousts and cliffhangers making us go through the crisis at high speed. If the series stands out by disrupting the collective imagination of a diplomacy of nobility, it nevertheless remains coherent and believable all along until a conclusion unfortunately rather implausible. The whole thing remains however thrilling and leaves us on a troubling radio transmission during the end credits cleverly toying with the concept of a post-credit scene.
After these first eight very promising episodes, Netflix did not waste any time in renewing the series for a second season already scheduled for next year!
