Original mexicain vs remake américain
« Miss Bala » est un thriller mexicain sorti en salles en 2011 qui fit partie de la sélection Un certain Regard au Festival de Cannes. Le film réalisé par Gerardo Naranjo met en scène dans le rôle principal, au côté de Noé Hernández, la jeune Stephanie Sigman qui a depuis notamment eu des rôles récurrents dans les séries « Narcos » et « S.W.A.T. ».
Un remake de ce film mexicain a par la suite été réalisé par Catherine Hardwicke. Le film sorti en salles en 2019 met en scène dans le rôle principal Gina Rodriguez (Jane the virgin ; Quelqu’un de bien) notamment au côté de son homologue portoricain Ismael Cruz Córdova et avec la participation d’Anthony Mackie.
L’histoire est la suivante : celle d’une jeune femme participant à un concours de Miss à Tijuana qui est témoin du meurtre de plusieurs officiers de police et de la DEA par le cartel de La Estrella dans un bar appelé Le Millenium dans lequel elle s’était rendue avec sa meilleure amie Suzu. Cherchant désespérément son amie, elle est alors kidnappée par le cartel et son leader Lino pour qui elle accepte d’effectuer des missions en échange de la recherche de son amie et de la vie sauve de sa famille.
Si l’on se base sur l’avis des critiques, l’original est un très bon film et son remake un film très moyen, alors voici pourquoi le remake de 2019 est un bon remake. Il est clair que l’original est thriller dramatique quand son remake est un thriller d’action. Le film mexicain est plus dur, plus sombre, plus réaliste que son remake hollywoodien plus « propre » visuellement, plus riche dans ses décors également, avec une intrigue à plus grande échelle. Si le remake de SONY s’apparente plutôt à un de leurs petits films d’action tel que « Proud Mary », le film de Naranjo de 2011 donnait plutôt une sensation proche de celle d’un « Sicario ».
Si l’histoire centrale est bien évidemment conservée, avec le kidnapping, la mission de mule et la corruption au Mexique, le remake se permet quelques changements sur le personnage principal qui est cette fois américaine et n’a pas de famille directe, ainsi que sur le scénario avec la puce de téléphone, l’information de Jimmy ou le trajet à la frontière par exemple. Mais ces changements ne sont pas anodins et juste là pour américaniser le remake, ils permettent d’accentuer la tension et de changer le ton du film. L’intrigue est légèrement simplifiée également, tout en rajoutant un nouvel axe au film avec l’intervention directe de la DEA. Dans le premier, la jeune fille est uniquement témoin, elle est victime de tout ce qui lui arrive, dans le second, elle passe de victime à actrice des événements à travers un côté infiltration du film qui la fait jouer sur les deux tableaux. Si elle cherche simplement à survivre dans l’original, dans le remake elle agit par elle-même.
Le personnage de Lino est également modifié dans le remake. Dans l’original il s’agit d’un homme relativement âgé et blessé dans presque tout le film qui vit simplement mais n’hésite pas à abuser de la jeune femme alors que dans le second c’est un jeune et beau chef de cartel qui vit dans l’opulence et dont la relation avec la jeune Miss est beaucoup plus ambiguë. Son personnage y est plus développé, plus humanisé peut-être mais surtout avec plus de similitudes avec le passé du personnage principal permettant aux deux de se comprendre. La fin des deux films est également totalement différente autant en termes de ton que d’implication pour l’ensemble des personnages.
Le second est clairement plus classique dans son exécution, on se doute de ce qui va arriver, mais malgré son manque d’originalité, il fonctionne tout aussi bien que l’original, peut-être même mieux. Le fait est, que d’une part ils sont très différents dans la mesure où l’un est un film très noir et l’autre plus un film d’action et globalement plus positif, mais d’autre part les changements et simplifications dans l’intrigue ne sont pas nécessairement des points négatifs car l’histoire est, certes moins crédible, mais plus claire ce qui est un bon point.
« Miss Bala » de 2019 comporte donc plus d’action, plus de tension et plus d’intensité, il est très clairement plus divertissant que l’original dont le fatalisme en faisait plus un drame réaliste. Les deux films sont donc différents et peuvent se regarder pour différentes raisons, personnellement j’ai préféré le remake (pour une fois), certes le côté grand spectacle, plus action et plus divertissant aide sûrement, mais c’est aussi que je l’ai trouvé plus captivant. On s’attache plus aux personnages de la Miss et de son amie Suzu dans le remake que dans l’original par exemple. Tout dépend donc de ce que vous recherchez, plutôt du sensationnel ou plutôt un film noir suivant l’unique point de vue du personnage principal. Et c’est en cela que « Miss Bala » de 2019, est un bon remake : il reprend le même concept, la même intrigue de base mais en changeant le ton du film, son exécution et in fine son genre. Il apporte donc quelque chose de nouveau au matériau d’origine, ce qui est essentiel pour un bon remake. Je ne pense donc pas qu’il doive nécessairement être considéré comme un mauvais film simplement parce qu’il s’éloigne du réalisme et du dramatique du premier.

Mexican orignal vs American remake
« Miss Bala » is a Mexican thriller released in theaters in 2011 which was part of the Un certain Regard selection at the Cannes Film Festival. The film directed by Gerardo Naranjo features in the lead role, alongside Noé Hernández, the young Stephanie Sigman who has since had recurring roles in the TV shows « Narcos » and « S.W.A.T. ».
A remake of this Mexican film was later directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The film was released in theaters in 2019 and stars Gina Rodriguez (Jane the virgin; Someone great) alongside her Puerto Rican counterpart Ismael Cruz Córdova and with the participation of Anthony Mackie.
The story is about a young woman participating in a Miss contest in Tijuana who witnesses the murder of several DEA and police officers by the La Estrella cartel in a bar called The Millennium where she had gone with her best friend Suzu. Desperately looking for her friend, she is then kidnapped by the cartel and its leader Lino for whom she agrees to carry out missions in exchange for the search of her friend and the safety of her family.
Based on the critics’ opinion, the original is a very good movie and its remake a very mediocre one, so here’s why the 2019 remake is actually a good remake. It is clear that the original is a dramatic thriller when its remake is an action thriller. The Mexican film is tougher, darker, more realistic than its Hollywood remake which is visually « cleaner », richer in its sets too, and with a larger scale plot. If SONY’s remake is more like one of their little action films such as « Proud Mary », Naranjo’s 2011 film was more like a « Sicario ».
If the central story is obviously kept, with the kidnapping, the mule mission and the corruption in Mexico, the remake allows itself some changes on the main character who is this time American and has no direct family, as well as on the storyline with the phone chip, Jimmy’s information or the trip to the border for example. But these changes are not insignificant and just there to Americanize the remake, they increase the tension and change the tone of the film. The plot is also slightly simplified, while adding a new angle to the film with the direct intervention of the DEA. In the first one, the girl is only a witness, she is a victim of everything that happens to her, in the second one, she goes from victim to protagonist of the events through an infiltration dimension of the film that makes her play on both sides. If she simply tries to survive in the original, in the remake she acts by herself.
Lino’s character is also altered in the remake. In the original he is a relatively old man wounded in almost the entire film who lives simply but does not hesitate to abuse the young woman, while in the second one he is a young and handsome cartel boss who lives opulently and whose relationship with the young Miss is much more ambiguous. His character is more developed, more humanized perhaps but especially with more similarities with the past of the main character allowing both to understand each other. The end of the two films is also totally different both in terms of tone and implication for the characters as a whole.
The second one is clearly more conventional in its construction, you can easily guess what is going to happen, but despite its lack of originality, it works just as well as the original, maybe even better. The point is, on the one hand they are very different in that one is a very dark film and the other is more of an action film and globally more positive, but on the other hand the changes and simplifications in the plot are not necessarily negative points because the story is, certainly less credible, but clearer which is a good point.
Therefore, the 2019’s « Miss Bala » has more action, more tension and more intensity, it is clearly more entertaining than the original whose fatalism made it more of a realistic drama. The two films are therefore different and can be watched for different reasons, personally I preferred the remake (for once), certainly the more action and entertaining side certainly helps, but it is also that I found it more captivating. You get more attached to the characters of the Miss and her friend Suzu in the remake than in the original for example. So, it all depends on what you’re looking for, rather the sensational or rather a film noir from the sole point of view of the main character. And that’s why 2019’s « Miss Bala », is a good remake: it takes the same concept, the same basic plot but changes the tone of the film, its execution and ultimately its genre. So, it brings something new to the original material, which is essential for a good remake. So, I don’t think it should necessarily be considered a bad film just because it moves away from the realism and drama of the first one.
