Pour son premier film américain, l’argentin Damián Szifron (Les Nouveaux Sauvages) signe un thriller nerveux et troublant qui se démarque des autres fictions policières avec un sous-texte moderne, des dialogues percutants et un talentueux casting porté par une Shailene Woodley impeccable aux côtés d’un Ben Mendelsohn toujours charismatique à souhait. Quand Baltimore est secouée par un crime de masse dont le tueur et ses motivations restent inconnus, les démons intérieurs d’Eleanor vont aider à cerner l’esprit de ce tueur singulier …
« Misanthrope » (‘To catch a killer’ en VO) aurait pu être un grand polar avec sa tension maintenue, son fond social et nihiliste ainsi que sa mise en scène inventive avec une récurrence des plans inversés reflétant la société minée, malade et consumériste, qu’il décrit. Mais si la relation du duo principal reste le nerf de l’intrigue, la résolution de l’enquête est quelque peu décevante sur la fin et pas véritablement à la hauteur de son introduction. Reste néanmoins un bon thriller policier à savourer entre fins limiers !

“To Catch a Killer” could have been a major detective drama with its sustained tension, its social and nihilistic background as well as its creative direction with a recurrence of inverted shots reflecting the flawed sick and consumerist society it depicts. But if the relationship of the main duo remains the heart of the plot, the resolution of the investigation is somewhat disappointing at the end and not really up to its introduction. Nevertheless, it remains a good crime thriller for keen sleuths!
