Produite par Point Grey et distribuée sur la plateforme Hulu aux USA et donc sur Disney+ dans la rubrique Star en Europe, « Pam & Tommy » est une mini-série de huit épisodes explorant le scandale de La sex tape des années 1990 ayant révélé au grand public la lune de miel de Pamela Anderson, l’actrice de « Alerte à Malibu », et Tommy Lee, le batteur du groupe Mötley Crüe !
Excellente série, « Pam & Tommy » nous prend par surprise en se révélant d’un profond romantisme et en montrant jusqu’au bout la vie du couple avec une extrême délicatesse. C’est certes une plongée dans le quotidien d’un couple de stars mais le récit dépasse ses perspectives individuelles pour mettre à jour des dynamiques sociales en mélangeant de nombreux thèmes d’actualité tels que notre culture de la célébrité, l’anonymat du web, le sexisme (en particulier d’Hollywood), la place des femmes, ainsi que la question du consentement.
La série est portée par l’interprétation de ses acteurs et notamment de son duo principal qui se donne à fond. Lily James est époustouflante en sosie de Pamela Anderson et Sebastian Stan casse la baraque en incarnant Tommy Lee. Mais c’est finalement l’écriture de la série qui impressionne le plus tant elle excelle dans le renversement du point de vue du spectateur. Au début, on prend en effet parti pour Rand (Seth Rogen) et on ne peut que détester Tommy, mais ne serait-ce qu’à la fin du deuxième épisode, on éprouve exactement l’inverse. La série joue donc avec nos émotions et réussit à nous investir dans le parcours de chacun des personnages en structurant ses épisodes avec les deux histoires et les deux points de vue en parallèle. Cela en devient un véritable dilemme pour le spectateur et la conclusion n’en est alors que plus haletante. Cette capacité à retourner notre point de vue est par ailleurs magnifiquement illustrée dans la scène du Tonight Show en adoptant tout d’abord le point de vue du spectateur puis dans l’envers du décor révélant alors une tout autre Pamela.
Plus qu’un biopic d’un couple de stars, « Pam & Tommy » s’impose comme une série dynamique à la fois drôle et poignante (et ça fait beaucoup de contenu R pour du Disney hein …) !

“Pam & Tommy” is a great TV show that takes us by surprise by revealing a deep romanticism and by showing until the end, the life of this couple with an extreme sensitivity. It is of course a look into the daily life of a couple of celebrities but the story goes beyond its individual prospects to reveal social dynamics by mixing many topical themes such as our celebrity culture, the anonymity of the web, sexism (especially in Hollywood), the status of women, as well as the issue of consent.
The series is driven by the performance of its actors and especially its main duo who give their all. Lily James is breathtaking as a Pamela Anderson look-alike and Sebastian Stan rocks as Tommy Lee. But it is ultimately the writing of the series that is most impressive as it excels in reversing the viewer’s point of view. At first, we root for Rand (Seth Rogen) and we can only hate Tommy, but by the end of the second episode, we feel the exact opposite. The show plays with our emotions and manages to engage us in the journey of each of the characters by structuring its episodes with the two stories and the two points of view in parallel. This becomes a real dilemma for the viewer and the conclusion is then only more thrilling. This ability to flip our point of view is also beautifully illustrated in the Tonight Show scene by first adopting the viewer’s perspective and then turning us around and revealing a completely different Pamela.
More than a biopic of a couple of stars, “Pam & Tommy” is a dynamic series that is both funny and moving (and oh boy that’s a lot of R-rated content for Disney …)!
