Le nouveau film des studios Disney est adapté de sa célèbre attraction éponyme de type parcours scénique et – tout comme elle – n’est pas un pur produit de frissons et s’adresse avant tout aux jeunes. Mettant de côté sa verve politique, Justin Simien (Dear White People) signe une comédie d’horreur familiale empreinte d’un caractère enfantin autour de la question du deuil avec un casting de stars mené par Rosario Dawson (Ashoka ; Daredevil) et Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta ; Sorry to Bother You ; Judas and the Black Messiah) aux côtés de Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto et le jeune Chase W. Dillon. Une mère et son fils y engagent une équipe de pseudo-experts pour les aider à chasser les fantômes qui semblent hanter leur maison.
Malgré une deuxième partie plus faible, « Le Manoir Hanté » remplit son contrat : un film d’horreur pour toute la famille avec de bons moments, un ton horrifique et des comiques de situations. C’est un mélange sympathique entre comique et horrifique sans être jamais vraiment terrifiant ou hilarant. C’est vrai que le film fait peu peur et fait peu rire, mais dès le départ le projet se trouve dans un entre-deux qui ne satisfera ni les adeptes de comédie, ni ceux d’horreur. En revanche il pourra convaincre ceux y verront justement ce mélange. Mais le film et son gros budget font face à un choix de sortie particulièrement mauvais tant il aurait été plus apprécié et aurait eu beaucoup moins de difficulté au box-office en sortant pour Halloween …
Disney Studios‘ latest movie is adapted from its popular ride of the same name, and – just like it – is not a pure chilling experience, but rather is aimed primarily at young people. Putting aside his political flair, Justin Simien (Dear White People) directs a childlike family horror-comedy about grief, with an all-star cast led by Rosario Dawson (Ashoka; Daredevil) and Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta; Sorry to Bother You; Judas and the Black Messiah) alongside Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto and the young Chase W. Dillon. It features a mother and son who hire a team of so-called experts to help them hunt the ghosts that seem to haunt their home.
Despite a weaker second part, “Haunted Mansion” fulfills its mission: a horror film for the whole family with good moments, a horrific touch and some situational comedy. It’s a pleasant blend of comedy and horror, without ever being truly terrifying or hilarious. It’s true that the film doesn’t scare much or spark much laughter, but from the outset the project finds itself in an in-between position that will satisfy neither comedy nor horror fans. On the other hand, it should appeal to those who see in it just such a blend. But the film and its big budget face a particularly poor choice of release, as it would have been much more appreciated and successful at the box-office if it had been released for Halloween…
