Réalisé par André Øvredal (connu pour son excellent « The Jane Doe Identity »), « Le Dernier Voyage du Demeter » est librement inspiré de l’un des chapitres du célèbre roman « Dracula » de Bram Stoker. Malgré un gros budget et un casting prometteur – avec notamment David Dastmalchian, Corey Hawkins, Liam Cunningham et le jeune Woody Norman –, le long-métrage s’avère décevant. Si le concept d’une histoire de vampire hantant un navire en pleine mer attire, l’intrigue en elle-même se révèle bien trop classique, voire ennuyeuse par moments : le scénario fade, les ellipses et les personnages sans réelle profondeur reprennent bêtement le schéma narratif des films d’horreur peu innovants. Pourtant, les décors, les effets spéciaux (avec un monstre très bien modélisé, par ailleurs) et le travail sur les scènes nocturnes et d’intérieur pouvaient nous faire accrocher. Mais c’est plutôt l’inverse qui a eu lieu, et notre intérêt s’est vidé et échoué comme le Demeter sur la côte anglaise. Un long-métrage à la coque vernie mais qui n’a pas vraiment le vent en poupe.

Directed by André Øvredal (known for his brilliant “The Autopsy of Jane Doe”), “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is loosely based on one of the chapters in Bram Stoker’s famous novel « Dracula ». Despite a big budget and a promising cast – including David Dastmalchian, Corey Hawkins, Liam Cunningham and the young Woody Norman – the film turns out to be a disappointment. While the concept of a vampire haunting a ship on open sea is appealing, the plot itself proves far too conventional, even dull at times: the bland screenplay, ellipses and characters with no real depth stupidly repeat the narrative schema of uninnovative horror films. And yet, the sets, special effects (with a very well-designed monster) and attention to night-time and interior scenes could have kept us hooked. But the opposite happened, and our interest drained away and washed up like the Demeter on the English coast. A movie with a shiny hull, but with no real wind in its sails.
