Six ans après « Le Sens de la Fête », le super duo de réalisateurs Éric Toledano et Olivier Nakache est de retour avec leur nouvelle comédie « Une année difficile ». On y suit les aventures d’un groupe de militants écolos parisiens, rejoints sur un concours de circonstances par un duo d’adultes loufoques et surendettés, que rien ne prédestinait à s’engager pour cette cause.
« Une année difficile » fonctionne très bien : il est avant tout très drôle, notamment grâce au poilant personnage de Bruno (brillamment incarné par Jonathan Cohen). Un très bon jeu d’acteur global est d’ailleurs à souligner, porté par Pio Marmaï (Albert, acolyte de Bruno), Noémie Merlant (Cactus) et Mathieu Amalric (Henri). Plusieurs très belles scènes marqueront le spectateur – notamment celle d’introduction – proche de la farce surréaliste parodiant (ou pas) la folie de notre époque. Aucun personnage n’est ici épargné, tous sont moqués et tournés en douce dérision. C’est justement ce qui les rend aussi crédibles qu’hilarants (bien que parfois un peu caricaturaux).
L’histoire en elle-même tient bien la route, proposant un sujet sérieux (l’engagement pour la planète) comme très bon support au développement de la comédie. L’ossature travaillée du film en deux axes fait penser à « Samba » (2014) agrémentée d’éléments bien plus drôles, qui rappelleront « Intouchables (2011) et « Le Sens de la Fête » (2017). L’enchevêtrement entre les deux arcs narratifs (le militantisme écologique et le surendettement) fonctionne très bien.
En touchant une large audience par un film accessible et peu stigmatisant, « Une année difficile » réussit son pari : parler d’écologie en s’en moquant d’un juste dosage. Il donne assurément envie de s’engager grâce à ce bon moment de cinéma qu’il propose.
Un reproche qui pourra être fait à Nakache et Toledano pour ce film est sa fin ambiguë qui ne convainc pas vraiment, et quelques scènes un peu surprenantes (anecdotiques sur l’ensemble). Bref, un simple bémol sur un tout très séduisant qui fera date !

Six years after “C’est la vie!”, the great pair of French directors Éric Toledano and Olivier Nakache is back with their latest comedy “A Difficult Year”. The movie follows the adventures of a group of Parisian environmental activists, who are joined by a pair of zany, over-indebted adults who, by a twist of fate, would never have been destined to take up this cause.
“A Difficult Year” works very well: above all, it’s very funny, thanks in particular to the hilarious character of Bruno (brilliantly played by Jonathan Cohen). There’s some excellent acting throughout, by Pio Marmai (Albert, Bruno’s sidekick), Noémie Merlant (Cactus) and Mathieu Amalric (Henri). There are a number of memorable scenes – like the opening one – which verges on surrealistic farce, parodying (or not) the madness of our times. No character is left behind here, they are all mocked and gently derided. And that’s precisely what makes them as credible as they are funny (although sometimes a little caricatured).
The story itself holds up well, using a serious subject matter (the commitment to the planet) as an excellent backdrop for the comedy. The film’s elaborate two-axis structure is reminiscent of “Samba” (2014), with some much funnier elements, reminiscent of “The Intouchables” (2011) and “C’est la vie!” (2017). The intertwining of the two story-arcs (environmental activism and over-indebtedness) works very well.
By reaching a wide audience with a film that is accessible and not stigmatizing, “A Difficult Year” succeeds in its gamble: talking about ecology while poking fun at it in the right proportion. It certainly makes you want to get involved, thanks to the great cinematic experience it offers.
One criticism that could be levelled at Nakache and Toledano for this film is its ambiguous ending, which isn’t really convincing, and a few slightly surprising scenes (anecdotal overall). In short, it’s just a minor quibble on a very appealing whole that will go down in history!
