Un couple de comédiens et troubadours extravertis, les Berthelini, souhaite se produire dans un petit village. Mais leur spectacle tourne au vinaigre, le commissaire local n’est pas des plus affables et l’auberge s’avère moins accueillante que prévue… Bref, la soirée s’annonce longue. Très libre adaptation d’une nouvelle de Robert Louis Stevenson, ce long-métrage portugais est une comédie très décalée et un peu absurde, où le théâtre et la musique sont roi et reine. Performances d’actrices et acteurs à noter, donc, plus que l’histoire qui chantonne et s’égare (volontairement) comme ses personnages dans la nuit. Sans constituer un véritable film d’époque – puisque d’ailleurs deux périodes distinctes semblent se superposer très bizarrement –, « La Providence et la Guitare » dispose néanmoins de costumes, de décors, de dialogues et de musiques pittoresques qui créent une atmosphère crédible et surtout amusante. Un égayant divertimento auquel il faut certes accrocher mais qui dans l’ensemble reste original et rigolo.

The Berthelini, an outgoing couple of actors and troubadours, hope to perform in a small village. But their show goes awry, the local police chief isn’t exactly friendly, and the inn turns out to be less welcoming than expected… In other words, it’s shaping up to be a long evening. This Portuguese feature film – a very loose adaptation of a short story by Robert Louis Stevenson – is a wildly offbeat and slightly absurd comedy, where theater and music reign supreme. The performances by the actors and actresses are worth noting, more so than the story itself, which meanders and wanders (intentionally) through the night, much like its characters. While not strictly a period film – since, in fact, two distinct time periods seem to overlap in a very bizarre way – “Providence and the Guitar” nonetheless features picturesque costumes, sets, dialogue, and music that create a believable and, above all, entertaining atmosphere. A lighthearted piece of amusement that certainly takes some getting used to but which, in the end, stands out as original and fun.
