Il souffre d’hyperacousie l’obligeant à toujours porter des prothèses pour le protéger des agressions sonores, en particulier en ville. Alors arpenter les rues de New-York tous les jours avec le vieil artisan qui le considère comme un fils n’est pas toujours facile. Mais son hypersensibilité lui confère aussi une ouïe hors-normes qui lui est bien utile dans son métier : celui d’accordeur de piano. Lorsque des dettes médicales s’accumulent, il va alors découvrir malgré lui que son douloureux don peut lui ouvrir bien des portes …
Premier film de fiction du documentariste chevronné Daniel Roher récemment oscarisé pour son film « Navalny », « Le Virtuose » (dont le titre VO joue à la fois d’un double sens sur le mot ‘tuner’ ainsi que d’un jeu de mot récurrent tout du long du film avec un certain poisson) s’impose comme un polar singulier à l’atmosphère délicate parfaitement réussie. Véritable symphonie des genres, le film orchestre avec fluidité les notes comiques et dramatiques ainsi que les accords de suspense et de romance dans une partition formidablement portée par les jeunes et prometteurs Leo Woodall & Havana Rose Liu qui se répondent avec naturel et complicité aux côtés des vétérans Lior Raz et Dustin Hoffman.
Si l’ensemble est plutôt léger et très enjoué, une fois les personnages introduits l’intrigue parvient à faire basculer avec habileté son récit vers davantage de tension dramatique en s’approchant par moments du film de braquage qui en profite pour tacler gentiment le système de santé américain, tout en conservant un fin humour et en privilégiant le portrait de son héros et de ses personnages pleins de vie. Car si certains éléments de la trame peuvent sembler quelque peu prévisibles, l’ensemble nous porte tout du long avec facilité jusqu’à une fin particulièrement réussie grâce aux excellents parcours de ses personnages et leurs belles relations et interactions.
Très bon film, à la fois beau et dur qui réussit à transmettre une agréable sensation grâce à un certain sens du rythme, « Le Virtuose » vaut surtout pour son impressionnant travail sur le son qui adopte le point de vue de son protagoniste un peu à la manière de « Sound of Metal ». Très jazzy, c’est un film super cool qui tient sa partition jusqu’au bout en offrant de beaux morceaux y compris de belles compositions originales – en particulier en nous faisant ressentir la réussite et l’accomplissement d’une composition qu’on améliore et peaufine jusqu’à un rendu final où l’on a envie d’applaudir avec les personnages du public !

Feature film debut by veteran documentary filmmaker Daniel Roher, who recently won an Oscar for his film “Navalny”, “Tuner” stands out as a unique crime thriller with a perfectly executed, delicate atmosphere. A true symphony of genres, the film fluidly orchestrates comedic and dramatic notes, as well as chords of suspense and romance, in a composition wonderfully brought to life by the young and promising Leo Woodall and Havana Rose Liu, whose natural chemistry and complicity shine alongside veterans Lior Raz and Dustin Hoffman.
While the film is fairly light-hearted and very much cheerful, once the characters are introduced, the plot skillfully shifts the narrative toward greater dramatic tension, at times verging on a heist movie that takes the opportunity to gently criticize the American healthcare system, all the while maintaining a subtle sense of humor and focusing on the portrayal of its hero and his lively characters. For while certain elements of the plot may seem somewhat predictable, the film draws us in effortlessly from start to finish, culminating in a particularly successful ending thanks to the characters’ compelling journeys and their rich relationships and interactions.
If “Tuner” is a very good film – both beautiful and gritty – that manages to convey a delightful feeling thanks to its sense of pace, it above all stands out for its impressive sound design, which echoes the protagonist’s point of view in a way reminiscent of “Sound of Metal”. Very jazzy, it’s a super cool film that keeps up the tempo until the very end, featuring wonderful pieces of music, including beautiful original compositions – especially by making us feel the achievement and fulfillment of a composition that is refined and fine-tuned until the final performance, leaving us wanting to applaud along with the characters in the audience!
