Zak, 22 ans, est atteint du syndrome de Down (trisomique) et rêve de s’évader de sa maison de retraite pour devenir catcheur. Il croise le chemin de Tyler, un pêcheur en cavale. Eleanor travaille pour l’établissement de soins d’où fuit Zak, et part alors à sa recherche.
Premier film du duo de réalisateurs Tyler Nilson & Michael Schwartz, « The Peanut Butter Falcon » met en scène un trio a priori mal assorti avec les excellentes performances à l’écran de l’acteur trisomique Zak Gottsagen dont c’était le premier film, avec à ses côtés Shia LaBoeuf (« Sous surveillance » ; « Fury » ; « Pieces of a Woman ») dans un rôle puissant et Dakota Johnson (« Cinquante Nuances » ; « Suspiria ») dans un personnage plein de douceur.
Véritable microcosme, le film est particulièrement touchant avec une histoire dramatique, par moments triste, mais qui parvient à nous faire sourire et rire. En somme, un film qui nous fait faire un tour complet de la palette d’émotions qui fait l’âme humaine. Car c’est bien de cela dont il s’agit, un handicapé souvent discriminé en tant « qu’attardé » s’émancipe en tant qu’humain au contact de Tyler. Orphelin presque par nature, il retrouve des amis, et ainsi une famille qu’il choisit. C’est donc l’histoire de deux solitudes qui se rejoignent pour finalement en trouver une troisième et fonder une famille : pas besoin d’une maison pour trouver un foyer.
Un film au grand cœur qui s’avère très prenant et également joliment composé, avec certains plans particulièrement réussis.

Zak, 22, has Down syndrome and dreams of running away from his retirement home to become a wrestler. He crosses paths with Tyler, a fisherman out on the lam. Eleanor works for the nursing home from which Zak is fleeing, and goes looking for him.
First film of the duet of directors Tyler Nilson & Michael Schwartz, “The Peanut Butter Falcon” features a trio a priori mismatched at first glance with the excellent performances on screen of the trisomic actor Zak Gottsagen whose first film it was, with at his sides Shia LaBoeuf (“The Company you Keep”; “Fury”; “Pieces of a Woman”) in a powerful role and Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades; Suspiria) in a character full of kindness.
A genuine microcosm, the film is particularly touching with a dramatic story, at times sad, but which manages to make us smile and laugh. In short, a film that takes us on a complete journey through the palette of emotions that make the human soul. Because that’s what it’s all about, a handicapped person who is often discriminated against as « retarded » becomes emancipated as a human being when he comes into contact with Tyler. Orphaned almost by nature, he finds friends, and thus a family he chooses. It is therefore the story of two lonelinesses who meet each other to finally find a third one and start a family. No need for a house to find a home.
A film with a big heart that proves to be very gripping and also beautifully composed, with some particularly great shots.
