Un hymne à la vie et à l’amitié !
D’après l’article « The Friend : Love is not a big enough word » écrit par Matthew Teague, « Our Friend » raconte l’incroyable histoire vraie de cette famille qui a dû faire face à une véritable tragédie. Meilleur ami de Nicole et de son mari Matt, Dane décide de mettre sa propre vie en suspens et tout abandonner pour venir les aider lorsque Nicole apprend qu’elle a un cancer incurable qui ne lui laisse que quelques mois à vivre.
Présenté en septembre 2019 au festival de Toronto puis sorti seulement cette année, en janvier dernier aux USA et le mois dernier sur Amazon Prime Video en France, « Our Friend » est un impressionnant film incroyablement touchant. C’est très clairement le film le plus bouleversant et émouvant de cette année. On ne peut retenir nos larmes ! C’est un film intime, très intense et finalement très humain. Tous les aspects de la vie y sont ainsi transmis en alternant entre moments de pur bonheur et de profonde tristesse. Le film comporte en effet de nombreuses scènes de légèreté apportant une note cruciale d’humour dans la souffrance.
La réalisation de Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Megan Leavey) réussit à trouver ce juste milieu qui en fait un magnifique film plein d’émotions très variées. Cette réussite est également due à l’excellent casting aligné pour l’occasion avec Dakota Johnson (The Peanut Butter Falcon) dans le rôle de Nicole, Casey Affleck (Manchester by the sea) dans celui du mari et enfin l’habituellement comique Jason Segel (How I met your mother) dans celui de l’ami apportant ici une indispensable légèreté tout en faisant également preuve de talents dramatiques.

Based on the article « The Friend: Love is not a big enough word » written by Matthew Teague, « Our Friend » tells the incredible true story of this family who faced a real tragedy. Best friend to Nicole and her husband Matt, Dane decides to put his own life on hold and give up everything to come help them when Nicole learns she has incurable cancer that leaves her with only a few months to live.
Premiered in September 2019 at the Toronto Film Festival and then released only this year, last January in the US and last month on Amazon Prime Video in France, « Our Friend » is an impressive and incredibly touching film. It is very clearly the most moving and overwhelming film of this year. It’s just impossible to hold back on tears! It is an intimate, very intense and ultimately very human film. All the aspects of life are conveyed by alternating between moments of pure happiness and of deep sadness. The film indeed includes many scenes of levity bringing a crucial note of humor in the pain.
The direction of Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Megan Leavey) succeeds in finding this balance which makes it a beautiful film full of a wide range of emotions. This success is also due to the excellent cast with Dakota Johnson (The Peanut Butter Falcon) in the role of Nicole, Casey Affleck (Manchester by the sea) in the role of her husband and finally the usually funny Jason Segel (How I met your mother) in the role of the friend bringing here an essential levity while also showing dramatic talents.
