« Déçu ; beaucoup de blabla ; on dort tout le long ; nul … » telles sont les critiques des spectateurs. « Sublime ; majestueux ; unique ; magistrale odyssée intérieure … telles sont les critiques de presse. Vous l’avez compris, « Ad Astra » divise. Mais il divise très clairement entre presse et spectateurs et très peu au sein de chaque groupe. Pourquoi ? A mon avis, il s’agit d’un problème promotionnel. Les bandes-annonces laissaient penser à une odyssée spatiale d’aventure avec même une scène d’action sur la lune et un monde futuriste à la « Total Recall ». Mais le film ne comporte aucune vraie scène d’action, l’aventure est absente du film s’agissant bien plus d’une recherche intérieure du personnage principal et presque unique personnage du film. En effet si Brad Pitt est accompagné par un casting secondaire cinq étoiles (Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland, Liv Tyler), leurs rôles sont laissés en arrière-plan, chacun étant une étape du chemin parcouru par Brad Pitt. Quant aux passages montrant la société réprimée et en hologramme dans la bande-annonce c’est encore plus simple : ils sont absents du film. Voilà donc pourquoi les spectateurs sont déçus, ils ne s’attendaient tout simplement pas à cela, ils n’étaient pas venus pour ça, alors que la presse critique plus le film en lui-même. Mais si je m’attendais également à une version James Gray de « Interstellar », je reconnais qu’il s’agit en effet d’une belle odyssée intérieure particulièrement bien interprétée par Brad Pitt. On en ressort questionné philosophiquement sur la place de l’homme et son importance.

« Disappointed; a lot of gibberish; you sleep all the way through; it sucks… » these are the audience’s reviews. » Stunning; majestic; unique; masterly internal odyssey… these are the press reviews. As you have understood, « Ad Astra » is dividing. But it divides very clearly between the press and the audience and very little within each group. Why? In my opinion, this is a promotional issue. The trailers suggested an adventure space odyssey with even an action scene on the moon and a futuristic world like in « Total Recall ». But the film does not include any real action scene, the adventure is missing from the film being much more an inner quest for the main character and almost only character of the film. Indeed, if Brad Pitt is joined by a stellar secondary cast (Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Donald Sutherland, Liv Tyler), their roles are left in the background, each being a step in Brad Pitt’s journey. As for the passages showing the repressed society and the hologram in the trailer, it is even simpler: they’re not in the film. So that’s why the audience is disappointed, they just didn’t expect that, they didn’t come for that, whereas the press is reviewing the film itself. But if I also expected a James Gray version of « Interstellar », I recognize that it is indeed a beautiful inner odyssey, particularly well interpreted by Brad Pitt. It raises philosophical questions about the place of man and his importance.
