Une famille américaine d’origine coréenne vient s’installer dans l’Arkansas dans les années 1980 où le père cherche à y devenir fermier et à rendre son jardin fertile. Sa femme et ses enfants vont alors devoir s’acclimater à leur nouveau mode de vie, en particulier le petit David qui doit faire face à l’arrivée d’une grand-mère fantasque qu’il ne connaît pas et contraste tout particulièrement avec la grand-mère type américaine.

Grand Prix du Jury et Prix du Public à Sundance en 2020, puis Golden Globe du meilleur film en langue étrangère en 2021 suivi de six nominations aux Oscars, “Minari” est LE film indépendant qui a conquis le public et les critiques cette année. Grandement inspiré de la jeunesse du scénariste-réalisateur Lee Isaac Chung (Lucky Life), le film met en scène une émouvante déclinaison du rêve américain. Distribué par A24 et notamment produit par Brad Pitt, c’est en effet un film sur l’expérience des immigrants coréens aux États-Unis dans lequel ils doivent conjuguer entre préjugés et découverte de l’autre. Autant le père par sa relation avec l’excellent Paul (Will Patton) que le fils avec sa grand-mère qu’il ne peut supporter mais qui lui fait découvrir un nouveau monde. C’est d’ailleurs son actrice, l’impressionnante Youn Yuh-jung, qui est favorite pour remporter l’Oscar de la meilleure actrice dans un second rôle. Et son rôle s’avère en effet central au film comme en témoigne le titre.

S’il est vrai que j’ai eu un peu de mal à rentrer dans le film dans la première partie, je dois reconnaître qu’il s’agit d’un très beau film, un film lent, délicat et particulièrement bien joué. Car si l’on parle surtout de Steven Yeun et de Youn Yuh-jung en ce moment, personnellement c’est surtout le jeune Alan Kim qui m’a marqué et qui porte le film je trouve. Les enfants sont en effet le nerf de l’histoire : ils sont l’enjeu et le futur de la famille, mais également le reflet de l’intégration de la famille.

Un beau drame donc, accompagné d’une magnifique bande-originale.

PS : Malgré ses six nominations aux Oscars, “Minari” ne repart de la cérémonie qu’avec une seule statuette, celle de meilleure actrice dans un second rôle pour Youn Yuh-Jung !

A Korean-American family moves to Arkansas in the 1980s where the father seeks to become a farmer and make his garden fruitful. Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at Sundance in 2020, then Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2020 followed by six Oscar nominations, « Minari » is THE independent film that won over audiences and critics this year. Largely inspired by the youth of writer-director Lee Isaac Chung (Lucky Life), the film features a moving depiction of the American dream. Distributed by A24 and notably produced by Brad Pitt, it is indeed a film about the experience of Korean immigrants in the United States in which they must deal with prejudice and discovery of the other. Both the father through his relationship with the excellent Paul (Will Patton) or the son with his grandmother whom he cannot stand but who makes him discover a new world. It is her actress, the impressive Youn Yuh-jung, who is the frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. And her role is indeed central to the film as the title shows.

If it is true that I struggled a bit to get into the film in the first part, I must admit that it is a very beautiful film, a slow, delicate and particularly well-acted film. Because, if we mainly talk about Steven Yeun and Youn Yuh-jung right now, personally it is especially the young Alan Kim who impressed me and carries the film, I think. The children are indeed the nerve of the story: they are the stake, the future of the family, but also the reflection of the integration of the family.

Therefore, a beautiful drama supported by a great soundtrack.
