Ce film écrit par le scénariste de « The Big Short » et réalisé par le réalisateur de « Dalton Trumbo » dénonce très clairement les pratiques machistes dans la presse télévisée, mais le parallèle avec le sort des actrices dans le cinéma et le mouvement #MeToo de manière plus générale peut bien sûr également être fait. Le scénariste réutilise d’ailleurs la méthode de « The Big Short » avec une introduction par Megyn Kelly brisant directement le quatrième mur.
Ce nouveau film de presse s’intéresse à la presse elle-même en racontant le scandale révélé en 2016, où Roger Ailes le PDG de Fox News s’est vu accusé de harcèlement sexuel par de nombreuses femmes à commencer par Gretchen Carlson interprétée dans le film par Nicole Kidman. Mais c’est bel et bien Charlize Theron qui est au centre de ce film en incarnant Megyn Kelley connue pour avoir essuyé une attaque de Donald Trump au sujet de ses règles. L’actuel président des Etats-Unis est d’ailleurs présent tout au long du film comme l’histoire recherchée par la chaîne mais dont le film s’éloigne progressivement pour se concentrer sur la chaîne elle-même en particulier avec un personnage inventé et interprété par Margot Robbie dans le rôle de la jeune journaliste victime des abus de son patron. Les trois générations de journalistes sont ainsi mises en vitrine par un excellent trio.
Margot Robbie obtient une nomination aux Oscars pour ce rôle dans lequel le sexe symbole des années 2010s se retrouve justement confronté à ce problème et acquiert ainsi une dimension supérieure à certains autres rôles de l’actrice. Mais on ne peut s’empêcher de remarquer l’incroyable travail de maquillage et de latex sur John Lithgow interprétant le PDG et Charlize Theron méconnaissable sous les traits de Megyn Kelly. L’actrice prend d’ailleurs la voix de la journaliste pour compléter ce réalisme bluffant.
Le film prend très clairement parti mais pose la question à travers le personnage de Margot Robbie de la coexistence d’une idée féministe tout en étant conservateur et républicain. Personnellement, j’attendais beaucoup ce film, donc comme pour de nombreux films où les attentes sont très hautes, on en sort un peu déçu mais « Scandale » en reste néanmoins un bon film engagé, particulièrement bien joué mais s’approchant peut-être trop souvent du militantisme politique.

This film written by the screenwriter of « The Big Short » and directed by the director of « Trumbo » very clearly denounces the macho practices in the television press, but the parallel with the treatment of actresses in the cinema industry and the #MeToo movement overall can of course also be made. The screenwriter also reuses the method of « The Big Short » with an introduction by Megyn Kelly directly breaking the fourth wall.
This new press film focuses on the press itself by recounting the scandal revealed in 2016, where Roger Ailes the CEO of Fox News was accused of sexual harassment by many women starting with Gretchen Carlson played in the film by Nicole Kidman. But it is indeed Charlize Theron who is at the center of this film by playing the role of Megyn Kelley known for having been attacked by Donald Trump about her period. The current president of the United States is by the way present throughout the film as the story sought by the channel but the film gradually moves away to focus on the channel itself in particular with a character created and played by Margot Robbie in the role of the young journalist victim of abuse by her boss. The three generations of journalists are thus showcased by an excellent trio.
Margot Robbie gets an Oscar nomination for this role in which the sex symbol of the 2010s finds itself confronted with precisely this problem and thus acquires a higher dimension than certain other roles of the actress. But we cannot help but notice the incredible make-up and latex work on John Lithgow playing the CEO and Charlize Theron unrecognizable as Megyn Kelly. The actress also takes the voice of the journalist to complete this bluffing realism.
The film takes sides very clearly but raises the question through the character of Margot Robbie of the coexistence of a feminist idea while being conservative and republican. Personally, I had high expectations for this film, so as with many films where expectations are very high, we come out a little disappointed but « Bombshell » remains nevertheless a good political film, particularly well-played but perhaps too often approaching political activism.
