Présenté au festival de Cannes 2021 dans la catégorie Un certain regard et au Festival de Sundance en 2022, « After Yang » est un film indépendant produit notamment par la très réputée société A24 et réalisé par Kogonoda. Le réalisateur américain d’origine sud-coréenne nous plonge dans un futur où tout nous semble à la fois familier et étrange, un curieux dépaysement qui lui sert de cadre pour une fable de science-fiction intimiste. Il nous plonge dans un jeu de piste entre la quête existentielle et l’acceptation de l’absence pour explorer l’identité de la Famille et nous interroger sur notre Humanité.
Kogonoda introduit sa vision d’une famille en pleine évolution où la mère s’efforce de garder la tête haute quand le père est dépassé. Il évoque la greffe des branches avec une femme noire, un homme blanc, et des enfants asiatiques, l’un n’étant pas du même sang et l’autre pas de la même espèce. Mais cette famille hybride et métissée se caractérise pourtant par ses qualités de synchronisation. Et à travers l’exploration de la mémoire du techno-sapiens, « After Yang » nous remémore avec poésie les nombreux doutes et bouleversements inhérents à toute existence, “sapienti”.
Le film met alors en place une atmosphère d’une rare délicatesse accordée au rythme lent de l’intrigue et de son hymne à la tendresse. Kogonoda impose ainsi sa marque avec une magnifique photographie très colorée, de longs plans fixes, et de belles idées de mise en scène dès le très original générique ou encore avec la scène de la carte mémoire dans une forêt de souvenirs. Colin Farrell impressionne dans un premier rôle émouvant et mélancolique tout en retenue face à la belle Jodie Turner-Smith, l’adorable Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, et le cyber-attachant Justin H. Min.

Presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021 in the Un Certain Regard category and at the Sundance Film Festival in 2022, “After Yang” is an independent film produced by the renowned company A24 and directed by Kogonoda. The American director of South Korean origin immerses us in a future where everything seems both familiar and strange, a curious disorientation that serves as a framework for an intimate science fiction tale. He embarks on a journey between the existential quest and the acceptance of absence to explore the identity of Family and to question our Humanity.
Kogonoda conveys his vision of a family in transition where the mother tries to keep her head up when the father is overwhelmed. He evokes the grafting of branches with a black woman, a white man, and Asian children, one not of the same blood and the other not of the same species. But this hybrid and mixed family is nevertheless characterized by its qualities of synchronization. And through the exploration of the memory of the techno-sapiens, “After Yang” reminds us with poetry the many doubts and upheavals inherent to any existence, « sapienti ».
The film then sets up an atmosphere of a rare delicacy matching the slow pace of the plot and its hymn to tenderness. Kogonoda thus establishes his style with a gorgeous and colorful photography, long still shots, and beautiful ideas of staging from the very original opening credits to the scene of the memory card in a forest of recollections. Colin Farrell impresses in a moving and melancholic lead role, all in restraint, facing the beautiful Jodie Turner-Smith, the adorable Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja, and the cyber endearing Justin H. Min.
