Comme promis à la fin du premier opus qui nous avait fait découvrir cette désormais iconique poupée-robot, M3GAN est donc de retour, avec fracas ! L’I.A. créée par l’ingénieure Gemma pour sa nièce Cady – et qui avait quelque peu vrillé quelques années auparavant –, refait son apparition dans la vie des deux femmes alors qu’une androïde militaire, baptisée AMELIA et conçue avec la même technologie que M3GAN, cherche par tous les moyens à devenir totalement indépendante de tout contrôle humain, quitte à éliminer les individus qui se mettraient en travers de son chemin…
La comparaison avec le premier volet est inévitable, mais commençons par dire que « MΞGAN 2.0 » n’est pas un film d’horreur. Si cette suite conserve en effet un registre comique voire satirique évident, elle consiste plus en un film d’action aux accents de gros blockbusters. Le scénario reprend (non sans une forme d’auto-dérision, certes) tous les poncifs des histoires de super-héroïnes devant sauver le monde, ce qui favorise de bonnes scènes de combat au détriment notoire du développement des personnages, relégués pour la plupart à des rôles très secondaires – y compris le duo Cady-Gemma.
Alors oui, ce long-métrage est franchement amusant (parce qu’il est bourré de scènes parfois très drôles mais aussi de péripéties et affrontements épiques qui fonctionnent très bien), mais « MΞGAN 2.0 » souffre clairement d’un appauvrissement de sa philosophie originelle. Ni les interrogations sur les rapides avancées technologiques (notamment en matière d’I.A.), ni le ton féministe de l’intrigue, ni la question de la reconstitution d’une famille ne sont véritablement approfondis ici, de sorte que ce deuxième film semble avoir vidé l’essentiel de la substance du premier – qui était pourtant une sacrée réussite.
Peut-être que « MΞGAN 1.0 » suffisait amplement sur bien des plans, d’où le choix risqué d’étirer son concept par le prisme de l’action et non plus celui de l’horreur. Le résultat en est assez décevant pour qui a adoré découvrir une foldingue M3GAN – qui s’est assagie et héroïsée un peu trop vite. « MΞGAN 2.0 » reste marrant, mais aucune suite n’égalera le film d’origine.

As promised at the end of the first installment, which introduced us to this now iconic robot doll, M3GAN is back, and with a bang! The A.I. created by engineer Gemma for her niece Cady – and which had gone haywire a few years earlier – reappears in the lives of both women, as a military android, named AMELIA and designed with the same technology as M3GAN, seeks by all means to become totally independent of human control, even if it means eliminating anyone who gets in its way…
Comparisons with the first installment are inevitable, but let’s start by saying that “MΞGAN 2.0” is not a horror film. While this sequel does indeed retain an obvious comic, even satirical register, it consists more of an action film with big blockbuster overtones. The script (admittedly with a certain amount of self-mockery) repeats all the clichés of stories about superheroines who have to save the world, which makes for good fight scenes to the obvious detriment of character development, relegated for the most part to very secondary roles – including the Cady-Gemma duo.
So yes, this movie is a lot of fun (because it’s packed with scenes that are sometimes very funny, but also with epic adventures and fights that work very well), but “MΞGAN 2.0” clearly suffers from an impoverishment of its original idea. Neither the questioning of rapid technological advances (particularly in the field of A.I.), nor the feminist tone of the plot, nor the question of reconstituting a family are really explored in depth here, so that this second film seems to have drained most of the substance from the first – which was in fact one hell of an achievement.
Perhaps “MΞGAN 1.0” was enough in many ways, hence the risky decision to stretch its concept through the lens of action rather than horror. The result is rather disappointing for those who loved discovering a crazy M3GAN – who has softened and heroized a little too quickly. “MΞGAN 2.0” is still great fun, but no sequel will ever match the original.
