Parti d’un petit film d’action ayant coûté $20M, la saga John Wick s’est rapidement développée après le succès (non pas en salles mais qui s’en suivit) du premier volet en 2014 puis est devenue LA référence du film d’action violent moderne, créant une mythologie du crime. La saga a continuellement augmenté son budget et considérablement son box-office pour arriver aujourd’hui avec un quatrième (et peut-être ultime) volet au budget de plus de $90M. Si le premier ne durait que 1h40 et se déroulait exclusivement à New-York, celui-ci frôle les 3h au rythme d’un bilan carbone inquiétant nous emmenant du Japon au Sahara en passant par Berlin, New-York (of course) et notre chère capitale parisienne !
Si la désormais célèbre saga est connue pour ses scènes d’action particulièrement travaillées avec une chorégraphie cohérente et une star, en la personne de Keanu Reeves (Matrix), très impliquée et compétente en la matière ; elle pouvait devenir quelque peu répétitive dans sa succession de combats sans dialogues mis à part les rares mots prononcés par le protagoniste. Ce quatrième chapitre réalisé par Chad Stahelski réussit la prouesse de nous maintenir captivés au rythme effréné de ses scènes d’action entre combats au sabre, fusillades et duel à l’ancienne, le tout dans une photographie toujours plus luxuriante avec de beaux jeux de couleurs et un cadrage stable extrêmement efficace nous laissant profiter de la chorégraphie des combats. Pour l’occasion Ian McShane et Laurence Fishburne sont de retour aux côtés des nouveaux arrivants Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rina Sawayama et l’excellent Donnie Yen (Ip Man). Dans son genre, c’est très clairement l’un des meilleurs films d’action récents même si les enjeux et l’intrigue restent malheureusement très similaires aux précédents opus ; ça n’est tout simplement pas l’objet d’un tel film.
Mais que tous les fans soient rassurés, l’univers John Wick ne s’arrêtera pas là avec la production en cours d’une série sur les hôtels Continental nous plongeant dans ce monde de la haute criminalité mondiale, et du film « Ballerina » sur les danseuses assassines de la Ruska Roma avec Ana de Armas !

Started as a $20M small action film, the John Wick saga quickly expanded after the success (not in theaters but subsequently) of the first installment in 2014 and then became THE reference of the modern violent action film, establishing a crime mythology. The saga has continuously increased its budget and significantly boosted its box office to culminate today with a fourth (and perhaps ultimate) part, with a budget of over $90M. If the first one lasted only 1h40 and was exclusively set in New-York, this one is close to 3h with a worrying carbon footprint taking us from Japan to the Sahara through Berlin, New-York (of course) and our beloved Parisian capital!
If the famous franchise is known for its action scenes particularly elaborated with a coherent choreography and a star, namely Keanu Reeves (Matrix), very involved and skilled in the matter, it could become somewhat repetitive in its succession of fights with no dialogue except for the rare words spoken by the protagonist. This fourth chapter directed by Chad Stahelski succeeds in keeping us captivated with the frantic pace of its action scenes between sword fights, shootings and old-fashioned duels, all with a cinematography lusher than ever with beautiful color schemes and a steady framing extremely successful letting us enjoy the fight choreography. For this film Ian McShane and Laurence Fishburne are back alongside newcomers Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rina Sawayama and the excellent Donnie Yen (Ip Man). Within its genre, it is clearly one of the best recent action movies even if the stakes and the plot remain unfortunately very similar to the previous installments; this is simply not the point of such a movie.
But all fans rest assured, the John Wick universe will not stop there with the ongoing production of a series on the Continental hotels taking us into this world of global high crime, and the film “Ballerina” on the assassin dancers of the Ruska Roma with Ana de Armas!
