En quelques mots :
C’est l’histoire d’un jeune homme algérien qui finit par vriller. Résumé très caricatural, nous l’admettons volontiers, mais tout dans le scénario peu entraînant de « L’Effacement » pousse manifestement Reda à imploser voire à exploser de rage. Et pourtant, il y avait matière à rendre ce film plus prenant – en particulier ce que nous vendent le synopsis et la bande-annonce, à savoir la disparition du reflet de Reda dans les miroirs qu’il croise. D’autant plus qu’il y a une vraie symbolique derrière cet élément narratif et le titre de ce long-métrage : Reda, fils plutôt bien-né d’un oligarque népotique mais déchu, se voit progressivement gommé par son propre pays, l’Algérie – via un difficile service militaire dans le désert, ladite « lutte contre la corruption », son éviction professionnelle ou encore ses désillusions sentimentales. Mais non : « L’Effacement » balaye ces thèmes sans les approfondir, préférant une intrigue elliptique, tronquée et aux dialogues ban[c]als. Notons cependant la brillante prestation de Sammy Lechea qui parvient malgré tout à nous charmer avec son interprétation de Reda.

In short:
It’s the story of a young Algerian man who ends up going haywire. Granted, that’s a very simplistic summary, but there’s everything in the uninspiring screenplay of “The Vanishing” that drives Reda to implode or even explode with rage. And yet, there was plenty to make this film more compelling – especially what the synopsis and trailer sell us, namely the disappearance of Reda’s reflection in the mirrors he comes across. Especially as there’s a real symbolism behind this narrative element and the title of this feature-length film: Reda, the rather well-born son of a nepotistic but fallen oligarch, sees himself gradually erased by his own country, Algeria – via a difficult military service in the desert, the so-called “fight against corruption”, his professional ousting and sentimental disillusionment. But no: “The Vanishing” sweeps over these themes without delving any deeper into them, preferring an elliptical, truncated plot with lame, unremarkable dialogue. Sammy Lechea gives, however, a brilliant performance and still manages to delight us with his portrayal of Reda.
