L’histoire d’un vrai mensonge !
Nai Nai, la grand-mère chinoise de Billi est mourante. Selon la tradition chinoise, ses proches décident alors de lui cacher la vérité et utilisent le mariage de son petit-fils comme prétexte à une réunion de famille pour venir partager tous ensemble ses derniers instants de bonheur. Mais pour sa petite-fille, Billi, née en Chine mais élevée aux Etats-Unis, le mensonge s’avère plus difficile à respecter, elle embarque donc dans ce voyage émouvant sur les traces de ses origines retrouvant l’intensité des liens qui l’unissent à sa grand-mère.
Film indépendant présenté au festival de Sundance en 2019 et arrivé dans nos salles françaises en janvier 2020, « L’Adieu » est un film écrit et réalisé par Lulu Wang et distribué par le prestigieux studio A24. C’est une comédie dramatique fortement inspirée de l’expérience de la réalisatrice et de celles des citoyens sino-américains. Lulu Wang est parvenue à faire son film sans avoir à le « blanchir » ou à le tourner en pure comédie : c’est avant tout un drame très touchant mais qui s’avère également drôle par moments. Un très beau film social sur les sociétés chinoise et américaine, à la fois émouvant au vu des circonstances et critique sur certains aspects de ces deux communautés à travers les différents personnages de cette famille, originaires de tous horizons.
Si l’excellente Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians ; Jumanji : Next Level) avait d’ores et déjà prouvé maîtriser le comique, elle montre ici qu’elle peut magistralement jouer le drame aussi aux côtés notamment de Shuzhen Zhao dans le rôle central de Nai Nai. The story of a true lie!
Nai Nai, Billi’s Chinese grandmother, is dying. In accordance with Chinese tradition, her relatives decide to hide the truth from her and use her grandson’s wedding as a pretext for a family reunion to come and share her last moments of happiness together. But for her granddaughter, Billi, born in China but raised in the United States, the lie proves more difficult to keep, so she embarks on a moving journey in the footsteps of her origins, rediscovering the intensity of the ties that unite her to her grandmother.
Independent film presented at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019 and released in our French theaters in January 2020, « The Farewell » is a film written and directed by Lulu Wang and distributed by the prestigious studio A24. It is a comedy-drama strongly inspired by the director’s experience and those of Chinese-American citizens. Lulu Wang managed to make her film without having to « whitewash » it or turn it into a pure comedy: it is above all a very touching drama, but which is also funny at times. A very beautiful social film about Chinese and American societies, both moving given the circumstances and critical of certain aspects of these two communities through the different characters of this family from all sorts of cultures.
If the excellent Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians; Jumanji: The Next Level) had already proved to master the comedy, she shows here that she can masterfully play the drama as well, especially alongside Shuzhen Zhao in the central role of Nai Nai. A powerful film that will definitely make you call your grandmother …
