« Jamais tu n’arriveras à te défaire de cette femme », mais Roland le doit-il et le veut-il vraiment ? Étonnante mais surtout touchante histoire vraie, « Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan » raconte la production d’un miracle engendré par une mère pour son fils. Adaptation du roman éponyme et autobiographique de Roland Pérez – dont le titre qui détonne n’était pas celui qu’avait prévu son auteur, avouera-t-il à France Inter –, le long-métrage est autant une double biographie qu’un hommage émouvant à la figure maternelle exceptionnelle qu’a été Esther dans la vie de la famille Pérez.
En 1963, Roland, dernier d’une fratrie de six enfants, naît avec un pied bot, une difformité qui, si elle n’est pas opérée, l’empêchera de le faire marcher. Mais sa mère Esther, juive pieuse et convaincue au plus profond de son âme que son fils tiendra un jour debout, fera tout ce qui est en son pouvoir pour que ce soit le cas – notamment en priant, en consultant des dizaines de médecins et en se battant contre les services sociaux qui menacent de faire placer son fils handicapé et dont elle refuse qu’on le qualifie ainsi. Déscolarisé plusieurs années et même immobilisé plusieurs mois, Roland devra son salut non seulement à la détermination de sa mère qui réussira à le faire marcher, mais aussi à l’artiste Sylvie Vartan dont il deviendra un fan absolu : il apprendra même à lire grâce aux chansons de cette femme ! Et, coup du destin, Roland finira d’ailleurs par rencontrer et côtoyer la chanteuse – qui joue son propre rôle dans le film.
Comédie dramatique, « Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan » propose une symphonie d’émotions chaleureuses, en grande partie transmises par une Leïla Bekhti rayonnante et stupéfiante d’amour et de dévotion dans son incarnation d’Esther. Mais bien que centré essentiellement sur ce très serré (voire étouffant) duo mère-fils, le film dresse aussi le portrait de toute une famille soudée autour de Roland et d’Esther, cette dernière ayant finalement accompli un miracle : celui de donner une belle et grande vie à son fils. Voilà donc une belle histoire qui ne pourra que vous faire sourire !

And does he really want to? “Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan” (lit. ‘My mother, God and Sylvie Vartan’) tells the story of a real-life miracle engineered by a mother for her son. Adapted from Roland Pérez’s autobiographical novel of the same name – the title of which, as he confessed on the radio to France Inter, was not what the author had intended – the film is as much a double biopic as it is a moving tribute to the exceptional mother figure that Esther was in the life of the Pérez family.
In 1963, Roland, the youngest of six siblings, was born with a clubfoot, a deformity that, if left untreated, would prevent him from walking. But his mother Esther, a devout Jew with the deepest conviction that her son will one day stand on his own two feet, will do everything in her power to make sure that he does – including praying, seeing dozens of doctors and fighting the social services who threaten to have her disabled son placed in a home as she refuses to allow them to label him as such. Out of school for several years and even bedridden for several months, Roland owed his salvation not only to his mother’s determination to make him walk, but also to the artist Sylvie Vartan, of whom he became an absolute fan: he even learned to read thanks to her songs! And, as fate would have it, Roland would eventually meet and get to know the singer – who plays her own role in the film.
“Ma mère, Dieu et Sylvie Vartan is a dramatic comedy that offers a symphony of warm emotions, largely conveyed by a radiant Leïla Bekhti, astoundingly loving and devoted in her portrayal of Esther. But although the film is essentially centered on this very close (even suffocating) duo of a mother and her son, it also depicts an entire family united around Roland and Esther, the latter having finally achieved a miracle: that of giving her son a great and beautiful life. It’s a beautiful story that will make you smile for sure!
