Un thriller amnésique !
Une fille fait tout pour aider son père de 80 ans qui vit seul dans son appartement londonien et semble perdre la mémoire. Elle essaye de lui trouver une soignante qu’il puisse apprécier et tente de s’y retrouver dans un labyrinthe de questions sans réponse. A première vue, l’histoire d’une femme tentant d’aider son père âgé et perdant la mémoire semble de l’ordre du drame, mais on est finalement plus proche du thriller tant on suit la trajectoire intérieure de cet homme dont la réalité se brise peu à peu sous nos yeux.
Réalisé par le très acclamé auteur français Florian Zeller, « The Father » est une adaptation de sa pièce de théâtre qui lui valut de nombreuses récompenses notamment aux Oscars où le film reçut six nominations et deux statuettes : celle de meilleur acteur dans un premier rôle et celle de meilleur scénario adapté. C’est en effet un excellent film à la fois mystérieux, émouvant et même drôle par moments. L’ensemble accompagné par la musique de Ludovico Einaudi et plusieurs airs d’opéra donne une ambiance unique au film.
En effet, dans un film presque intégralement à huis clos dans l’appartement, le personnage principal – tout comme le spectateur – commence à perdre ses repères et le montage du film est construit de manière à nous faire vivre ce que ressent le personnage y compris ses problèmes de mémoire. Cela devient donc un jeu pour nous de reconstitution pour démêler la réalité de l’imagination et s’y repérer chronologiquement et un calvaire pour le personnage joué par Anthony Hopkins. Quelle performance remarquable de l’acteur gallois ! Sa qualité de jeu porte totalement le film brillamment accompagné par un casting secondaire dont l’excellente Olivia Coleman.
C’est simple : c’est l’un des tout meilleurs films de l’année !

An amnesiac thriller!
A daughter does everything she can to help her 80-year-old father who lives alone in his London flat and seems to be losing his memory. She tries to find him a carer he can appreciate and tries to find her way through a maze of unanswered questions. At first glance, the story of a woman trying to help her elderly father who is losing his memory seems like a drama, but in the end, it is closer to a thriller as we follow the inner journey of this man whose reality is gradually shattered before our eyes.
Directed by the highly acclaimed French author Florian Zeller, « The Father » is an adaptation of his play that earned many awards, including the Oscars, where the film received six nominations and two statuettes: best actor in a leading role and best adapted screenplay. It is indeed an excellent film, mysterious, moving and even funny at times. The whole supported by the score of Ludovico Einaudi and several opera tunes gives a unique atmosphere to the film.
Indeed, in a film almost entirely behind closed doors in the apartment, the main character – just like the viewer – begins to lose his bearings and the editing of the film is designed to make us experience what the character feels, including his memory issues. It becomes a game for us to untangle reality from imagination and to find our way chronologically and an ordeal for the character played by Anthony Hopkins. What a remarkable performance by the Welsh actor! His acting totally carries the film brilliantly accompanied by a secondary cast including the excellent Olivia Coleman.
It’s simple: this is one of the best films of the year!
