Nous retrouvons Diana Prince dans les années 80, elle vit désormais à Washington D.C. au milieu des humains dans une ère de la consommation et de l’excès. Elle continue à se cacher avec son emploi au musée tout en agissant occasionnellement en tant qu’héroïne, la célèbre Wonder Woman. Mais la Princesse Amazone va devoir se munir de toute sa force et son courage lorsqu’elle retrouve Steve, fait face à Maxwell Lord et doit stopper sa collègue Barbara devenue la célèbre Cheetah !
Patty Jenkins est de retour derrière la caméra pour cette suite de ce qui s’avérait l’un des meilleurs films, pour moi, de l’actuel Univers Cinématographique des studios DC, sortie en salles et sur HBO Max fin décembre dernier et le 31 mars directement en VOD en France à cause de la situation sanitaire. Et d’une part, cette suite est un bon divertissement : si l’on aime les adaptations de comics, on passe un bon moment devant « Wonder Woman 1984 ». C’est pourquoi, le film se fait injustement trop lourdement critiquer de mon point de vue. Mais d’autre part, il est très clairement en-dessous du premier opus et cela pour plusieurs raisons.
Tout d’abord, il souffre de longueurs, il fait au total 2h30, et cela pèse malheureusement quelque peu sur le film. La scène d’introduction, est certes impressionnante, mais semble plus être en vue du ‘spin-off‘ centré sur les Amazones que sur le reste de l’intrigue de ce film. Par ailleurs, il cherche, je pense, à en faire trop : nous avons en effet ‘l’origin story‘ de Max Lord et de Barbara Minerva, tous deux méchants de ce même film, avec par-dessus ces menaces, les retrouvailles avec Steve. Aucune relation de ces personnages avec Diana ne semble alors développée assez en profondeur.
Enfin, le dernier acte est très clairement “too much” en particulier le traitement de Cheetah dans la bataille finale. Néanmoins, il faut noter que cet aspect excessif est présent tout au long du film dans la mesure où il s’agit d’un élément de l’intrigue, l’histoire se déroulant dans les 1980. Mais si le côté très coloré ou le jeu un peu surfait de Kristen Wiig et Pedro Pascal sont cohérents avec le film, la fin dessert clairement le reste. Le retour de Chris Pine aux côtés de Gal Gadot est cependant une note positive en particulier pour ses aspects comiques.

She continues to hide with her museum job while occasionally acting as the heroine she is, the famous Wonder Woman. But the Amazon Princess will have to summon all her strength and courage when she reunites with Steve, faces Maxwell Lord and has to stop her colleague Barbara who has become the famous Cheetah!
Patty Jenkins is back behind the camera for this sequel of what turned out to be one of the best movies, for me, of the current DC Studios Cinematic Universe. And on one hand, this sequel is a good entertainment: if you like comic book adaptations, you will have a good time watching « Wonder Woman 1984 ». That’s why the movie is unfairly too heavily criticized from my point of view. But on the other hand, it is clearly below the first installment and for several reasons.
First of all, it suffers from length, its full runtime is 2h30, and this unfortunately weighs somewhat on the film. The opening scene is certainly impressive, but seems to be more related to the spin-off centered on the Amazons than to the rest of the plot of this movie. Moreover, it tries, I think, to do too much: we have indeed the origin story of Max Lord and Barbara Minerva, both villains of this same film, with on top of these threats, the reunion with Steve. None of the relationship of these characters with Diana seems then to be developed sufficiently in depth.
Finally, the last act is clearly too much, especially the handling of Cheetah in the final battle. Nevertheless, it should be noted that this over-the-top aspect is present throughout the film insofar as it is an element of the plot, the story taking place in the 1980s. But if the very colorful side of the film or the slightly exaggerated acting of Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal are consistent with the film, the end clearly undermines the rest. The return of Chris Pine alongside Gal Gadot is however a positive note especially for its comedic aspects.
