A l’image de la première série Marvel de l’an dernier « WandaVision », la première de cette année se distingue également très clairement du reste de l’univers cinématographique Marvel (MCU). « Moon Knight » met en scène une intrigue mêlant mystère introspectif, compétition divine et secrets d’un passé refoulé, le tout dans un univers Marvel presque déconnecté du reste du canon nous transportant entre l’Égypte antique et moderne.
C’est bien simple « Moon Knight » utilise parfaitement le format de mini-série limitée dont elle dispose. Elle met en place de manière claire et efficace les personnages principaux, elle nous garde en haleine sans interruption grâce à de multiples indices, et d’excellents cliffhangers, et elle n’entame pas de multiples sous-intrigues pour de futures saisons. Le design des personnages, aussi bien Moon Knight lui-même que Khonshu, sont excellents, les décors sont travaillés et la réalisation de Mohamed Diab et du duo Benson & Moorhead propose de nombreux plans intéressants notamment avec le jeu dans les reflets ou encore les scènes de combat vues uniquement au réveil du personnage.
La série est par ailleurs très juste dans son traitement d’un personnage qui souffre de trouble dissociatif de l’identité et profite pour cela d’un Oscar Isaac au top de sa forme qui mérite très clairement un Emmy Award pour son incroyable performance. Le reste du casting enrichit également la série avec la jeune May Calamawy en ambassadrice de son pays chez Marvel, Ethan Hawke dans le rôle d’un antagoniste tenace qui profite d’une excellente scène d’introduction sans dialogue, mais également de la voix de F. Murray Abraham et de la dernière participation cinématographique du regretté Gaspard Ulliel.
La bande-originale de Hesham Nazih mêlant thèmes épiques et musique égyptienne moderne vient parfaire cette aventure bien équilibrée entre mystères d’identité, rebondissements surnaturels et combat de super-héros.
Much like last year’s first Marvel series « WandaVision, » this year’s first is also very clearly distinct from the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). « Moon Knight » features a storyline of introspective mystery, divine competition and secrets from a repressed past, all set in a Marvel universe that is almost disconnected from the rest of the canon, taking us between ancient and modern Egypt.
It’s simple, « Moon Knight » makes perfect use of the limited mini-series format it offers. It clearly and effectively sets up the main characters, it keeps us on the edge of our seats with multiple clues, and excellent cliffhangers, and it doesn’t open up multiple subplots for future seasons. The design of the characters, both Moon Knight himself and Khonshu, are great, the sets are well done and the direction of Mohamed Diab and the duo Benson & Moorhead offers many interesting shots, especially with the reflections or the fight scenes seen only when the character wakes up.
The series is also very accurate in its portrayal of a character suffering from dissociative identity disorder and benefits in that regard from an Oscar Isaac at the top of his game who clearly deserves an Emmy Award for his incredible performance. The rest of the cast also enhances the show with the young May Calamawy as her country’s ambassador in Marvel land, Ethan Hawke in the role of a relentless antagonist who gets an amazing opening scene with no dialogue, as well as the voice of F. Murray Abraham and the last acting appearance of the late Gaspard Ulliel.
Hesham Nazih’s soundtrack featuring epic themes and modern Egyptian music completes this well-balanced adventure between mysteries of identity, supernatural twists and superhero action.
