Semaine chargée en super-héros puisqu’après la conclusion de « Moon Knight », la 5e série live-action des studios Marvel disponibles sur Disney+, le géant des comics sort le 28e film de son univers connecté, le MCU. « In the Multiverse of Madness » est donc à la fois une suite directe du premier film « Doctor Strange » mais aussi de la série « WandaVision » et dans une moindre mesure du récent succès « Spider-Man : No Way Home » et de la série « Loki ». Autant dire que pour prendre la mesure complète des événements, il vaut mieux avoir suivi – même si le film reste appréciable en lui-même.
Le film voit le retour de Sam Raimi à la réalisation d’un film de comic-book quinze ans après sa première trilogie Spider-Man et sa patte se ressent très clairement avec notamment de nombreux plans tournoyants et instables ainsi que des scènes au plus proche de l’horreur à ce jour pour le MCU. Et avec le réalisateur des « Evil Dead » c’est aussi le retour du légendaire compositeur Danny Elfman. Le scénario est quant à lui écrit par Michael Waldron, le créateur de la série « Loki » qui est donc responsable pour l’inclusion du multivers dans cette phase de l’univers Marvel.
« Multiverse of Madness » propose d’impressionnants visuels nous transportant véritablement dans d’autres mondes avec quelques beaux plans et un rythme soutenu. L’ensemble des acteurs sont de retour avec Benedict Cumberbatch et Elizabeth Olsen en tête, mais aussi Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, et l’introduction du personnage d’America Chavez jouée par la jeune Xochitl Gómez. Cette dernière a d’ailleurs un rôle vraiment central malgré un personnage assez faiblement développé.
La profondeur des personnages et de l’histoire est ainsi ce qui fait défaut au film car le divertissement, lui, est au rendez-vous ! Son personnage titre n’a en effet droit à aucun développement supplémentaire, contrairement à « No Way Home » qui n’était pas “son” film, les très nombreux caméos surprises sont superbes mais n’enrichissent en rien l’histoire, et même le personnage de Wanda – qui est le plus développé – n’est pas aussi nuancé qu’il l’était dans le même registre dans « WandaVision ». L’absence de Vision est en cela un véritable manque à mon sens. « The Multiverse of Madness » possède donc un immense potentiel qu’il n’exploite pas pleinement.
C’est ainsi un film qui ne satisfait pas pleinement les grandes attentes qu’il a générées et qui peut s’avérer quelque peu décevant sur certains points pour les fans du MCU. Mais les fans de Sam Raimi devraient quant à eux adorer. Au final, beaucoup auront le même avis : un film qui change des autres Marvels mais certains le verront comme un rafraîchissement attendu depuis longtemps pour une franchise fatiguée et d’autres comme un opus inadéquat avec le reste de la multi-saga.

This was a busy week for superheroes, since after the conclusion of “Moon Knight”, the 5th Disney+ live-action series from Marvel Studios, the comic book company released its 28th film in its connected universe, the MCU. “In the Multiverse of Madness” is thus both a direct sequel to the first “Doctor Strange” movie but also to the « WandaVision » show and to a lesser extent to the recent box office hit “Spider-Man: No Way Home” as well as the “Loki” series. So, to get the full measure of what’s going on, it’s best to have been following along – although the film is still enjoyable in its own right.
The film is Sam Raimi’s return to directing a comic book movie fifteen years after his first Spider-Man trilogy and his style is clearly felt with many twisting and turning shots and scenes that are the closest to horror to date in the MCU. And with the director of “Evil Dead” it is also the return of the legendary composer Danny Elfman. As to the script, it is written by Michael Waldron, the creator of the “Loki” series, who is responsible for the inclusion of the multiverse in this phase of the Marvel universe.
“Multiverse of Madness” offers impressive visuals that truly take us to other worlds with some beautiful shots and a strong pace. The whole cast is back with Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen in the lead, but also Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and the introduction of America Chavez played by the young Xochitl Gómez. She has a really key role in spite of a rather weak character development.
The depth of the characters and the story is indeed what’s missing unlike the entertainment which is definitely there! The title character is not given any additional development, unlike in “No Way Home” which was not « his » movie, the many surprise cameos are great but do not enrich the story, and even the character of Wanda – who is the most developed – is not as nuanced as it was in the same respect in “WandaVision”. The absence of Vision is, in that respect, a big lack in my opinion. Therefore “The Multiverse of Madness” has a huge potential which is not fully exploited.
It is thus a film that does not fully meet the high expectations it raised and that may be somewhat disappointing on some aspects for MCU fans. But Sam Raimi fans should really love it. In the end, many will have a similar opinion: a movie that differs from the other Marvels, but some will see it as a long-awaited revitalization of a tired franchise and others as an out-of-place installment with the rest of the multi-saga.
